As we head into another action-packed week of Eagle athletics, our focus shifts to a fundamental truth of the Kent City sports culture: it’s not just about how you start, it’s about how you finish. Every season is a journey of peaks, valleys, and relentless effort. Whether our teams are currently sitting at the top of the standings or fighting through the growing pains of a rebuilding year, the mission remains exactly the same—to compete with pride, push past limitations, and define our own legacy.
This week brings a powerful mix of celebration, high-stakes tournament play, and championship opportunities. We will pause to honor the incredible foundation laid by our seniors in baseball and softball, watch a hungry young core fight for conference recognition in golf, and witness programs taking undeniable strides forward in soccer.
Every time our student-athletes step onto the field, track, or course, they aren't just playing for the scoreboard; they are building the future of Kent City sports. No matter the record, no matter the seed, and no matter the opponent, our expectation is that the Eagles play until the final whistle, the final swing, and the final stride. Let’s finish this week strong, honor a special group of seniors, and leave a legacy that inspires the next generation.
Week in Review
Varsity Baseball: The varsity baseball team struggled last week picking up one win in six outings. Kent City defeated White Cloud 7-1 in the first game of a double header, but then dropped the next game 5-1. Then against Reed City, the Coyotes swept the Eagles, 14-3 and 12-1. On Saturday, Kent City fell to Cedar Springs 3-1 and North Muskegon 6-1. Kent City is 8-16 overall and 4-2 in the CSAA White.
Varsity Boys Golf: The varsity boys golf team finished in 7th place (out of 9 teams) in this week’s CSAA Jamboree at the Village Green in Newaygo. Bryce Chappel led Kent City for the first time this season with a 98, followed by Lincoln Thom with a 99, Myles Freeland with a 105, and Ethan Stuhan with a 111.
Varsity Girls Soccer: The varsity girls soccer team competed in the CSAA Blue Tournament last week and picked up another win! On Monday, Kent City traveled to Big Rapids and fell to the top seeded Cardinals, 8-0. On Wednesday, the Eagles went up to Grant and defeated our northern rivals 2-1. Then on Friday, the Eagles finished in 6th place with a 3-1 loss to Chippewa HIlls. Kent City is now 3-13-1 overall and 1-8-1 in the CSAA Blue.
Varsity Softball: The varsity softball team put together a 6-1 record this past week. On Tuesday, the Eagles made quick work of White Cloud, defeating the Indians 17-2 in both games. The following day, Kent City battled the cold, wind, and Reed City, overpowering the Coyotes, 11-6 and 15-5. Finally on Saturday at the Coopersville Tournament, Kent City fell to the host school 13-3, but rebounded with wins over Plymouth Christian (3-2) and Kalamazoon Loy Norrix (25-4). Kent City is now 21-5-1 and 3-3 in the CSAA White.
Varsity Boys Track and Field: The varsity boys track and field team wrapped up the CSAA White championship on Tuesday, defeating Morley Stanwood 101-27. On Friday, Kent City had a good showing at the MHSAA Regionals, finishing in 4th place out of 17 schools. The Eagles had two individuals and two relay teams advance to the State Finals at Kent City: Jonah Hawthorne (400 m) and Julio Sanchez (Shot Put) and the 4x200 m relay team (Victor Vazquez, Kolton Fox Wellman, Ayden DeVoogd, and Jonah Hawthorne) and the 4x400 m relay team (Victor Vazquez, Jonah Hawthorne, Logan Thompson, and Kale Freeland)
Varsity Girls Track and Field: The varsity girls track and field team also easily defeated Morley Stanwood on Tuesday to clinch a share of the CSAA White title, defeating the Mohawks 105-31. Then at the MHSAA Regionals, the Eagles also finished in 4th place in the 17 team field. Kent City had two individuals qualify for the State Finals in three events (all 1st place finishes): Elliana Max (1600 m and 3200 m) and Addison Korcal (Shot Put).

Varsity Boys Golf @ CSAA Championship
Wednesday, May 20 | 9:00 a.m. | The Links of Bowen Lake
The varsity boys golf team will play in the CSAA Championship at the Links of Bowen Lake on Wednesday to wrap up CSAA Blue play. The 5th of five CSAA Blue events, this one comes at a neutral site and is mandatory for golfers to compete in to earn all-conference honors. Kent City currently is in 7th place out of nine teams and will be looking to make a push for the 6th spot on Wednesday (48 strokes behind Grant). In terms of all-conference, the Eagles are on the outside looking in (top 18). A bit of a youth movement on the golf team, Kent City’s leading golfers are freshmen Ethan Stuhan and Myles Freeland, and sophomores Lincoln Thom and Bryce Chappell. Ethan could make a run at an all-conference bid, currently in 25th place heading into the final event.
Varsity Softball vs. Fremont (DH)
Wednesday, May 20 | 4:00 p.m. | Kent City High School
The varsity softball team will host Fremont on Wednesday in a nonleague double header on Senior Night. The Packers are 18-10 on the season and will be a good challenge for the Eagles (19-4). Looking at common opponents, Fremont has a similar resume, easily defeating White Cloud, splitting with Holton (Kent City beat Holton twice), and losing to Newaygo, 8-9 (Kent City beat Newaygo twice). In between games, we will pause to honor our nine seniors who have been a very important part of Kent City’s success in softball for the last four seasons: Brooklin Armstrong, Laynee Hoffman, Lylah Larson, Sienna Larson, Alyssa Miller, Maddyson Mitchell, Milah Mollien, Laila Mortensen, Deanna Rodriguez, and Katie Rogers.
Varsity Girls Soccer vs. West Catholic (Districts)
Wednesday, May 20 2026 | 6:00 p.m. | Kent City High School
Kent City will host the opening round of the MHSAA Girls District Soccer Tournament at Kent City on Wednesday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m. The Eagles earned the 7th seed according to their Michigan Power Ranking (MPR) and will host the 2nd seeded West Catholic Falcons. Although Kent City will be a longshot to advance in this one, there has been some positive momentum building for the girls soccer program this spring that is worth noting. Kent City’s 3-13-1 record is not all that impressive, but it is three more wins than the 2025 campaign (1-13-1), a season when Kent City failed to finish the year due to injuries and low numbers. Another positive is goals scored. In 2025 Kent City scored 11 goals, in 2026 the Eagles have netted 32 goals. Defensively they have given up 69 goals compared to 83 goals in 2025.
