We are officially in our last month of the season now and we are in the thick of our planning for that final week of May. In case you are new to Kent City, the week after Memorial Day is the busiest week in our community each year, ESPECIALLY on the following Saturday when two times the population of our community ascends on Ward Memorial Field for the MHSAA State Track and Field Finals. This year will be no different and I ask everyone in our community to save the date: Saturday May 30, or better yet the week as we are hosting two other big events leading up to the Finals this year.
On Thursday, May 28, Kent City will host the MHSAA District Finals in Girls Soccer at 6:00 p.m. This will be our first go around with a District Final in girls soccer. Then on Friday, May 29, not only will teams start to roll in to inspect our track facilities in the afternoon, but we will be hosting the MHSAA Baseball District Semi Finals and Finals beginning at 12:00 p.m. I think it goes without saying, we will need your help! As we move throughout the month, I will be communicating with everyone on what is needed, I hope you will join us for these fun events to end 2025-26!

On Monday, the Eagles defeated Covenant Christian 10-8 in game one, and then came from behind in game two to earn a 7-7 tie. Then on Thursday, Kent City defeated Newaygo on the road in both games of a double header, 13-3 in the first game and 11-6 in the second. Kent City is now 12-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the CSAA White.

Key Contests
Varsity Baseball, Softball & Track @ Central Montcalm
Tuesday, May 5 | 4:00 p.m. | Central Montcalm High School
Eagle nation will make the roughly one hour trip to Stanton on Tuesday with lots of league title implications hanging in the balance. The varsity baseball and track and field teams need wins to stay atop of the CSAA White standings, whereas the varsity softball team will have to win to stay in the hunt for a league championship.
Central Montcalm won the CSAA White in baseball last year with an 11-1 record, losing only to White Cloud. This year the Hornets are 7-8 overall and 4-0 in the CSAA White with double header wins over Morley Stanwood and White Cloud. They also lost to Newaygo in both games of a double header (0-5 and 2-12) a team the Eagles just split with (17-4 and 0-18). Kent City will need to take at least one game from the Hornets, navigating Central Montcalm’s ace pitcher who is finishing his fourth season playing on the varsity team.
For softball, Central Montcalm is a chance to stay in the race for the CSAA White. The Eagles lost to Morley Stanwood in both games two weeks ago, so in addition to winning out in league play, they will need some help from Lakeview and/or White Cloud. The Hornets also dropped both games to Morley Stanwood (4-5 and 8-17).
Over on the track, the varsity boys look to have a slight edge heading into the meet vs. Central Montcalm and Lakeview, which will largely be based on the success of the relay teams and Kent City’s ability to deliver points in every event. A win on Tuesday would ensure Kent City at least a share of the conference championship, the other half will be determined at Friday’s CSAA League championship at Lakeview.
The girls track and field team is also in position to seal up at least a share of the title. However, it appears they are facing a much taller hurdle against the Hornets. Central Montcalm will have the edge in the sprints while Kent City has an advantage in the distance races. Field events look to be fairly even. On paper, Central Montcalm should win, but the competition will take place on an actual track on Tuesday . . . not paper.
Varsity Girls Soccer vs. Newaygo
Wednesday, May 6 | 6:00 p.m. | Ward Memorial Field
The varsity girls soccer team will host Newaygo on Wednesday for their final regular season game of 2026, which will also include Family Appreciation and Senior Night festivities prior to the game. With two CSAA Blue games remaining this upcoming week, Kent City is 0-5 and at the bottom of the league standings. Unless they can pull off the upset in both games this week (Monday @ Lakeview), Kent City will be on the road for the entirety of the CSAA Blue Tournament that will start on Monday, May 11 and continue through Friday, May 15 with three games. Wednesday’s game vs. Newaygo will be a tough one for the Eagles. Kent City is battling injuries at this point in the season and will be missing some of their key players. Despite that, Kent City has still been competitive and will not back down to the Lions. Newaygo is 6-4-1 overall on the season and 2-2 in the CSAA Blue. They have beaten three teams who defeated Kent City: Sparta, Chippewa Hills, and Reed City. Our four seniors will eager to turn the tables on Newaygo though playing in their final regular season game at Ward Memorial: Lydia Howard, Paola Puente, Irma Rivera Gallegos, and Estefany Serrano-Guzman.
Varsity Boys Golf @ CSAA Blue Jamboree
Thursday, May 7, 2026 | 9:00 a.m. | The Falls
On Thursday, Kent City will host the nine CSAA Blue teams at the Falls of Barber Creek for the third of five league jamborees. Kent City has finished in 6th place (@ Katke Golf Course) and 7th place (Whitefish Lake Golf Course) so far in league play. The goal for the Eagles will be to keep working towards the 400 team score mark, they shot a 427 at Katke Golf Course and a 423 at Whitefish Lake Golf Course. To accomplish this, Kent City will need one more golfer to get down around the century mark for 18 holes; currently they have three golfers in that vicinity, Ethan Stuhan (99), Bryer Armstrong (99), and Lincoln Thom (101). That will not move them up the standings much (6th place) but it will get them trending in the right direction as the season progresses. Playing on their home course will also be an advantage for Kent City on Thursday morning.
