Athletic Weekly 4-20 - 4-25

They say "April showers bring May flowers," and if that holds true, West Michigan is in for a spectacular bloom this year! While the rain has been relentless, the forecast finally shows a dry stretch ahead. This is a welcome relief for our spring teams, who are eager to trade the gym floor for the dirt and grass.

Our baseball and softball programs have been incredibly creative in finding outdoor practice space, but as any athlete knows, there is no substitute for the real thing. We want to extend a sincere thank you to our parents, fans, and student-athletes for your patience as we navigate these scheduling hurdles.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to our grounds crew and staff, who are working tirelessly alongside Mother Nature to ensure our facilities are game-ready. Let’s get outside and play!

Week in Review

Varsity Baseball: The varsity baseball ran into a tough Big Rapids squad on Tuesday, dropping both games to the Cardinals, 9-4 and 9-0.  Kent City falls to 1-5 on the season.

Varsity Boys Golf: The varsity boys golf team saw their first action of the 2026 season at  the 8th annual Kent City Eagle Invitational at the Fallls of Barber Creek.   As a team, Kent City finished 18th (out of 21 schools) and 8th in the White Division (out of 11 schools).   Individually, sophomore Lincoln Thom led the team with a 95, while freshman Ethan Stuhan shot a 104.

Varsity Girls Soccer: The varsity girls soccer team accomplished something that had not been done at Kent City since 2021 during the Eagles historic 9-7-2 campaign: they beat a team by mercy!   On Tuesday, Kent City ended the game early in the 2nd half against Grand River Prep, dominating the Titans 8-0.  Then on Thursday in their first CSAA Blue action of the season, the Eagles traveled to Reed City for the mud bowl, losing 3-2.   Kent City is 2-3 on the season.

Varsity Softball: The varsity softball team logged four games last week, winning three.   On Tuesday, Kent City defeated Big Rapids in both games of a double header, winning 5-4 and 14-4.  Then on Friday, Kent City traveled to North Muskegon and split with the Norse, losing 5-2 in the first game and winning 8-3 in the second game.   Overall Kent City is 7-1 on the season.

Varsity Boys Track and Field: The varsity boys track and field team completed at the Lakeview Invitational on Friday, finishing in 3rd place out of 12 teams.   Earning medals were Kale Freeland (3rd – 400m and 3rd – Long Jump), Jonah Hawthorne (5th – 400 m), Peyton Powell (1st – 110m hurdles and 2nd – 300 m hurdles), Cooper Stinson (5th – 110 m hurdles), Logan Thompson (6th 300 m Hurdles),  Julio Sanchez (4th – shot put and 2nd – discus), Logan Danielson (5th shot put and 4th in discus), Donovan Vogel (5th – pole vault), Kolton Fox Wellman (6th – long jump), (4x100 meter relay (Meade, Carr, Vazquez, and Fox-Wellman) - 2nd place, 4x200 meter relay (Meade, Carr, Vazquez, and DeVoogd) – 3rd place, and  4x400 meter relay (Freeland, Thompson, DeVoogd, and Powell) – 2nd place.

Varsity Girls Track and Field: The varsity girls track and field team also finished in 3rd place at the Lakeview Invitational.   Medaling for the girls were Hayla Goble (5th – 200m), Bayla Curtis (5th – 800 m), Elliana Max (3rd 1600 m, 1st – 3200 m), Joselyn Vogel (5th – 1600 m, 4th – 3200 m), Alyssa Schuiling (3rd – 100 hurdles), Callie Stinson (4th – 100 m hurdles, 6th – 300 m hurdles), Shelby Zimmer (1st – long jump), Saydie Vanderlind (4th – long jump), 4x400 m relay (Curtis, Vanderlind, Goble, Zimmer) - 3rd place, and 4x800 m relay (Max, Curtis, Vogel, Zimmer) - 2nd place.

Key Contests

 Varsity Girls Soccer vs. Grant

Monday, April 20 | 6:00 p.m. | Ward Memorial Field

The Eagles return to Ward Memorial Field for their second CSAA Blue matchup, hosting northern rivals, the Grant Tigers. Kent City is coming off a gritty 3-2 "mud-fest" loss at Reed City, where they nearly completed a three-goal comeback.

Despite their youth, the Eagles have shown massive growth in 2026:

Offensive Surge: The team has scored 19 goals in five games—surpassing last year’s season total by eight.

Win Column: With two wins already, they have doubled their 2025 victory count.

The Matchup: Grant enters the contest 0-4, having scored only twice this season. After falling 8-0 to Grant last year, Kent City looks to flip the script by starting fast—a key factor in both of their wins this season.

Varsity Softball @ Morley Stanwood (DH)

Tuesday, April 21 | 4:00 p.m. | Morley Stanwood High School

Kent City opens CSAA White play against arch-nemesis Morley Stanwood in a high-stakes doubleheader. In a shift from previous seasons, conference teams will only meet once this year, making every inning count.

The Mohawks are the reigning conference champions, but the Eagles proved they could compete last year by splitting their series. Here is how the 2026 season shapes up:

The Records: Morley Stanwood is a perfect 6-0, while Kent City sits at 7-1.

Strength of Schedule: The Eagles have faced tougher competition, including an 8-3 win over North Muskegon (4-2). The Mohawks have yet to beat an opponent with a winning record.

Offensive Firepower: Expect a battle of the bats, with Morley Stanwood averaging 14 runs per game and Kent City averaging 9.

11th Annual Kent City Elite Invitational

Friday, April 24, 2026 | 1:30 p.m. | Kent City High School

Kent City High School becomes the center of the track and field world this Friday as 21 schools from across Michigan—from Elk Rapids to Lawton—arrive for the 11th Annual Elite Invitational.

With up to 63 participants per event, earning a spot on the medal stand is a premier achievement. The top eight individuals and top six relay teams will take home hardware. Keep an eye on these Eagles:

Distance: Ellie Max

Sprinters: Andre Meade, Ayden DeVoogd, and Blake Carr.

Hurdles: Peyton Powell

Jumpers: Shelby Zimmer, Kale Freeland, and Kolton Fox Wellman

Throwers: Addison Korcal, Julio Sanchez and Logan Danielson.

Volunteer Call: An event of this scale requires an "army" of helpers! We are looking for volunteers to assist with field events, the medal stand, tickets, and concessions. Join us for an incredible day of competition that starts in the afternoon sun and finishes under the stadium lights.
