Athletic Weekly 3-9 – 3-14

Our spring sports season begins this week, but we still have one winter team competing as our varsity girls basketball team advances to the Regional round for the 13th time in the past 16 seasons. That level of consistency does not happen by accident—it reflects the commitment to excellence shown by hundreds of Kent City student-athletes over the years.

This week also brought the passing of legendary college football coach Lou Holtz, a man known not only for winning championships but for constantly reminding athletes that success begins with commitment, discipline, and doing the little things the right way. Lou Holtz, who led Notre Dame to a national championship in 1988, spent much of his career teaching that greatness is built on daily habits and high expectations.

That same commitment is what we hope to see from all of our students and student-athletes—not just in athletics, but in every area of their lives. Time and again, Kent City students have demonstrated the work ethic, resilience, and dedication that define our school community. Those qualities will continue to shape young men and women who make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

Week in Review

Varsity Boys Basketball: The varsity boys basketball team came up short in the Regional semifinal 53-50 to Calvin Christian.  The Eagles finish the season 16-9 overall.

Varsity Girls Basketball: The varsity girls basketball team won back to back District championships by defeating our western neighbors on Friday, 46-39.   On Wednesday, Kent City defeated North Muskegon 50-39 to advance to Finals.  Kent City is now 18-6 overall.

Varsity Wrestling: The varsity wrestling team had five student-athletes compete at the MHSAA Individual State Finals on Friday and Saturday.  Of the five, four came home as All-State: Dylan Russo (7th place – 106), Sam Kik (5th place – 113), Brooklin Armstrong (7th place – 120), and Sammy Anderson (7th place – 126).

Key Contests

Varsity Girls Basketball @ MHSAA Regionals

Mon. March 9 & Wed., March 11| 5:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. | Calvin Christian

Not unfamiliar territory for the Eagles, Kent City will make its second consecutive appearance in the MHSAA Regionals—once again hosted at Calvin Christian High School. Over the past 16 seasons, the Kent City girls basketball program has reached the Regional round 13 times, an impressive run of consistency. In fact, current head coach Sonnie Male was a junior in high school the last time the Eagles captured their first District championship during this 16-year stretch.

Last year, Kent City defeated its western neighbors to claim the District title before facing Calvin Christian in the Regional semifinal. On Friday night it looked like history might repeat itself, but Saugatuck had other plans. The Trailblazers (23-1) defeated Calvin Christian 63-56 to win the District and advance to Monday’s Regional semifinal matchup with the Eagles.

This will not be the first time Kent City and Saugatuck have met in this round. During the 2022-23 season the two teams squared off in the Regional semifinal at Shelby, where the Eagles made quick work of the Trailblazers with a convincing 66-32 victory. Since that loss, however, Saugatuck has compiled an impressive 68-5 record, though the Trailblazers have yet to advance past the Regional semifinal.

Saugatuck’s lone loss this season came to Western Michigan Christian (59-55) in January. The Warriors visited the Nest last Wednesday and were defeated by our western neighbors, 45-30.

Monday’s matchup will not be the first time the Eagles have faced a District champion this season. Big Rapids (19-4), Morley Stanwood (20-3), Hart (14-9), and Niles Brandywine (23-1) all won District titles this year, while Fremont (20-4) and Covenant Christian (22-1) fell in their District finals. Kent City has been battle-tested all season and has played a significantly stronger schedule than the Trailblazers.

For the Eagles to advance, they will need to win the turnover battle and use their athleticism to generate second-chance opportunities and hustle points.

With a win Monday, Kent City will face the winner of the nightcap between Parchment and Hart in Wednesday’s Regional Final at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles defeated Hart earlier this season on the Pirates’ home court, 64-58. Parchment, meanwhile, is a bit of an unknown. The Panthers (10-14) captured a District title to advance after emerging from a relatively weak bracket.

First things first, though. Kent City faces its biggest challenge yet Monday evening against the Trailblazers at 5:30 p.m.

As this is an MHSAA postseason event, all tickets must be purchased through GoFan.
