Athletic Weekly 3-2 – 3-7

We continue our journey down the tournament road with another busy and exciting week ahead for Kent City Athletics.

Last week was one for the history books. Two of our teams competed at the MHSAA Team Bowling State Finals, and our boys basketball program captured its first District championship since 2006 — a milestone moment for our school community.

Think about that for a second.

Where were our current student-athletes the last time the Eagles sent two bowling teams to the State Finals? In middle school. How about the last time Kent City won a boys basketball District title?  They weren’t even born yet.

This group of Eagles is doing more than winning games — they are establishing a blueprint for the future. They are building a winning culture rooted in unselfishness, work ethic, and belief in one another. Success like this does not happen by accident; it is earned through countless hours of preparation and a commitment to something bigger than yourself.

Our bowling teams more than exceeded expectations at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Team State Finals. The boys finished 11th after entering as the 14th seed, while the girls placed 12th after being seeded 16th — proof that rankings don’t define heart or performance.

As for boys basketball, a District championship may not have seemed likely at various points this season, especially in a bracket featuring four teams with winning records. But the Eagles didn’t just win the title — they did so in convincing fashion, demonstrating poise, toughness, and a team-first mentality throughout the week.

The momentum is real. The standard is rising. And our current Eagles are leaving a legacy that future Eagles will strive to match.

Key Contests

Varsity Boys Basketball @ MHSAA Regionals

Tuesday, March 3 & Thursday, March 5| 5:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. | WMC

Kent City has advanced to the Regional Semifinals for the first time in 20 years — and fittingly, they’ll face the same opponent they saw the last time they made this run: Grandville Calvin Christian High School.

Back in 2006, the Eagles and Squires met in the Regional Finals. Kent City defeated Shelby 49–42 in the semifinal before falling to Calvin Christian 49–37 in the championship game. A lot has changed since then — including the fact that the student-athletes who played in that game are now pushing 40 years old!

The 2025–26 versions of the Eagles and Squires feature two teams that finished third in their respective conferences. Kent City placed behind Central Montcalm and Morley Stanwood in the CSAA White, while Calvin Christian finished behind Fruitport and Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian Schools in the OK Silver.

Kent City enters Regional play at 16–8 overall and riding an eight-game winning streak. The Squires are 14–10 and entered the postseason on a two-game losing skid — though those losses came against the top two teams in their conference: NorthPointe Christian (65–46) and Fruitport (65–42).

Statistically, Calvin Christian hangs its hat on defense, allowing just 48.5 points per game. In fact, eight of the Squires’ ten losses came when their opponent surpassed 50 points. Through 24 games, Kent City has been held under the 50-point mark just once — a 51–48 loss to Central Montcalm.

In the nightcap, the host school will try to knock off its second straight Division 3 top-ten team when it takes on sixth-ranked Pewamo-Westphalia. The Warriors are coming off a District Finals upset of 10th-ranked North Muskegon, 49–43.

As these games are part of the Michigan High School Athletic Association postseason tournament, all tickets must be purchased through GoFan.

Varsity Girls Basketball @ MHSAA Districts

Wednesday, March 4 & Friday, March 6 | 7:00 p.m. | Kent City

With only four schools competing in this year’s District, Kent City’s girls basketball team will begin postseason play Wednesday night in the Nest as part of the Michigan High School Athletic Association tournament.

Kent City earned the top seed with a 16–6 overall record and will face fourth-seeded North Muskegon in the 7:00 p.m. nightcap. The Norse enter the postseason at 12–10, finishing fourth in the West Michigan Conference Rivers Division.

Throughout the season, Kent City and North Muskegon shared three common opponents: Hart, Muskegon Oakridge, and our Western Neighbors. Kent City went a perfect 3–0 against those teams, while North Muskegon finished 2–3, defeating Oakridge and splitting with our Western Neighbors.

Kent City’s six losses came against teams — including two losses to Morley Stanwood — that have combined for an impressive 96–11 record this season. The Eagles earned wins over four teams with winning records: Hart, Reed City, our Western Neighbors, and Newaygo. North Muskegon claimed one victory over a team with a winning record — our Western Neighbors.

With a win Wednesday night, Kent City will advance to Friday’s District Final to face the winner of our Western Neighbors and West Michigan Christian High School, who will tip off at 5:30 p.m. Those two teams met in early February, with the Warriors earning a 40–28 victory. West Michigan Christian went 5–5 in the month of February, including three straight losses to close out the regular season. Their final win came February 18 against Montague, 59–40.

They call it March Madness for a reason — with four teams in the District all sporting winning records, anything can happen.

As this is a Michigan High School Athletic Association postseason event, all tickets must be purchased through GoFan. Here is the link to purchase tickets:

Varsity Wrestling @ MHSAA State Finals

Friday, March 6 & Saturday, March 7 10:00 a.m. & 9:00 a.m. | Ford Field (Detroit)

On Friday and Saturday, five Kent City wrestlers will make the trip to Ford Field in Detroit for the MHSAA Individual Wrestling State Finals.

For three of the five, this will be a return trip — and all three earned All-State honors last season: seniors Sam Kik (5th place), Brooklin Armstrong (4th place), and Sammy Anderson (5th place). Joining them for their first appearance at the Finals will be freshman Dylan Russo and senior Logan Thompson.

Seeding for the Finals is based on Regional finishes: first-place finishers are matched up with fourth-place finishers from another Regional, while second-place finishers face third-place wrestlers from a different Regional. Kent City will send three Regional champions to the mat — Kik, Armstrong, and Russo. With his second-place finish, Anderson will also enter his first match as the higher seed.

The path to an All-State finish (top eight) requires winning two matches before losing two. Once a wrestler suffers two losses without two wins, the season comes to an end.

Looking at the brackets, I like our chances for all five wrestlers. We have some outstanding competitors taking the mat Friday — but just as important, we have some extremely tough kids. Pair their wrestling knowledge with their fighting spirit, and we could have a very busy afternoon on the podium Saturday.  To see the matchups, use the following link: Division 3 (Russo 106, Kik 113, Anderson 126, and Thompson 165) Girls Division (Armstrong 120)

Here is the link to purchase tickets for Friday and Saturday. Tickets can be purchased per session (three total sessions — one Friday and two Saturday) or as an all-session pass covering both days.
