Athletic Weekly 2-23 - 2-28

It’s not often we get to say we’re heading off to watch our teams compete in the MHSAA State Finals — but this is one of those special weeks. Kent City will have not one, but two teams bowling for a state championship.

On Friday, our varsity girls and boys bowling teams will travel to Jackson to compete at JAX 60 against 15 other Division 3 schools from across Michigan. The Eagles earned their spots last week with impressive Regional Runner-up finishes at Sherman Lanes, finishing ahead of 12 other boys teams and 10 other girls teams from West Michigan to punch their tickets to the Finals.

When was the last time Kent City had two teams competing at the State Finals on the same day? 2022 — when both the boys and girls bowling teams made the trip.

Moments like this deserve to be celebrated. The winter season isn’t over, and there are still opportunities ahead, but having two teams competing on the state’s biggest stage in the same weekend is a rare accomplishment for any school. Let’s enjoy it, support them, and recognize what a tremendous achievement this is for our athletes and program.

Week in Review

Varsity Boys Basketball: The varsity boys basketball team finished their regular season this past week with three victories.   On Monday, Kent City celebrated their seniors with a 63-38 win over Lakeview.  Then on Tuesday, the Eagles picked up a big win over Big Rapids, 67-52.   Finally on Friday, Kent City spoiled Morley Stanwood's championship aspirations with a 64-44 victory.  The Eagles finished the season 14-8 overall and 5-3 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Girls Basketball: The varsity girls basketball team defeated Lakeview on Senior Night, 67-18.   On Tuesday night, Kent City ran into a tough Big Rapids squad, losing 54-37.   Then on Friday, Kent City lost to conference arch-nemesis Morley Stanwood in a tightly contested game, 59-54.   Kent City is now 15-6 overall and 5-2 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Boys Bowling: The varsity boys bowling team remained near the top of the field all day finishing in 2nd place at the MHSAA Regionals, earning a berth in the State Finals at Jax 60.

Varsity Girls Bowling: The varsity girls bowling team recovered from a slow start and climbed up to 2nd place by the end of the day at the MHSAA Regionals, punching their ticket to the State Finals at Jax 60.

Varsity Wrestling: The varsity wrestling team hosted the MHSAA Regionals on Wednesday.  The Eagles dominated Comstock Park in the Semifinal round, defeating the Panthers 56-18.   In that match, senior Sam Kik recorded his 150th career victory.   Then in the Finals, Whitehall prevailed, edging Kent City 38-30.   Then on Saturday, Kent City had four wrestlers advance to the MHSAA Individual State Finals on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7.   The Eagles had two Regional champions, freshman Dylan Russo (106) and senior Sam Kik (113).    Finishing as Regional runner up was senior Sammy Anderson (126) and senior Logan Thompson (165) finished in 4th place advancing to Finals for the first time.  On Sunday, senior Brooklin Armstrong dominated the field winning the Regionals and punching her ticket to the MHSAA Wrestling State Finals as well.

Key Contests

Varsity Boys Basketball @ MHSAA Districts

Wednesday, February 25 & Friday February 27 | 7:00 p.m. | Kent City

Kent City enters the MHSAA District Tournament riding plenty of momentum — a six-game winning streak, a first-round bye, and home-court advantage. The Eagles are chasing the program’s first district championship since 2006 and will open postseason play Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the second of two semifinal games.

Kent City will face the winner of Monday’s quarterfinal between Morley Stanwood and White Cloud. It’s a strong possibility the Eagles will host the Mohawks for the second time in five days after closing the regular season with a convincing 64–44 win over Morley Stanwood.

If that matchup materializes, it would serve as the rubber match between the two teams — and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Last season, Kent City edged Morley Stanwood 61–56 in districts to advance to the finals before falling to their western neighbors. Interestingly, this year’s regular-season series followed a similar script: Morley Stanwood won the first meeting in a tight contest, followed by a decisive Kent City victory in the rematch.

Should the Eagles take care of business, a berth in the district finals likely awaits against either their neighbors to the west or top-seeded Montabella. Both Morley Stanwood and our western neighbors have notched wins over Montabella, and Kent City has beaten everyone but Montabella (Not on the schedule) this season – but past results mean little this time of year.

The postseason has a different feel. Possessions matter more. Turnovers loom larger. Defense becomes the difference. Playing at the Nest certainly won’t hurt — but execution will determine whether the Eagles can turn momentum into a long-awaited district title.

Since this is an MHSAA postseason event, all tickets must be purchased via GoFan.   Here is a link for Wednesday’s game: MHSAA District Semi-Finals – Kent City vs. TBD

Varsity Bowling @ MHSAA State Finals

Friday, February 27 and Saturday, 28 | 8:00 a.m. | Jax 60 – Jackson

The varsity bowling teams earned a trip to MHSAA State Finals in Jackson — marking the first time since 2022 that both squads are competing at the state level in the same season.

In 2022, after eight Baker games and two regular games, Kent City’s girls sat atop the Division 3 standings heading into match play, while the boys missed the cut, finishing 13th. In bracket play, the girls fell to eighth-seeded Shepherd in the first round, a team that caught fire at the right time and went on to win the state championship.

Friday’s mission is simple: finish in the top eight after the qualifying block. Teams outside the top eight head home. Last season’s cut line was 2,682 for the girls and 3,268 for the boys. At Sherman Lanes, Kent City posted scores of 2,312 (girls) and 2,850 (boys) — numbers that will need to climb if the Eagles are going to make a deep run.

There is little margin for error at this level. A slow start in Baker games won’t cut it against the best teams in the state. Both squads have proven throughout the season that they are capable of competing at a high level — now it’s about putting it all together on the same day.

On Saturday, senior Karley Eager will compete in the MHSAA Individual State Finals at JAX 60. She will bowl six regular games, with the top 16 of 56 advancing to match play to determine this year’s All-State team. Last year’s Division 3 cut was 1,070, though this year’s number will depend on the field. Based on regional results across the state, the cut line could be slightly lower.

If Karley advances, she’ll move into head-to-head competition — win and advance. In total, the state champion and runner-up will bowl as many as 14 games on Saturday.

Karley’s greatest strength is her composure. Her cool, steady demeanor keeps one bad shot from turning into a bad day — a trait that becomes invaluable on the sport’s biggest stage.

Tickets for both events must be purchased via GoFan, here is a link to purchase tickets:
