Athletic Weekly 2-16 - 2-21

The gravity of the upcoming week is not lost on the Eagles. Trophies hang in the balance. Berths in the State Finals are within reach. And a win over our conference arch-nemesis is always a highlight.

On top of that, we will celebrate Senior Night for both our girls and boys basketball teams on Monday against Lakeview, and we have a pivotal crossover matchup with Big Rapids still ahead. And yes — Kent City is hosting all of it.

Success this week will hinge largely on our mental preparation. Can we stay focused when something doesn’t go our way — a missed shot, a tough call, a rogue pin? Those moments will happen. The key is how we respond.

That responsibility belongs to all of us.

Whether we are on the mat, on the lanes, on the court, on the bench, or in the stands, we each have a role to play. Keep it positive. Don’t dwell on the past. Trust the preparation. Stick to the game plan.

If we do that, the hardware may very well take care of itself. There are as many as four trophies up for grabs this week. But our focus cannot be on the trophy presentation. It must be on the next play, the next move, the next ball.

With that mindset, we gain the advantage.

And when Kent City has that edge, great things happen for the Eagles.

Week in Review

Varsity Boys Basketball: The varsity boys basketball team picked up two wins this past week, first a 61-56 victory over Tri-County and then a 72-50 win at White Cloud.   Senior Aaron Vanderwest surpassed the 1,000 point milestone in the victory over the Indians.   Kent City is 11-8 overall and 3-3 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Girls Basketball: The varsity girls basketball team fell short in a non-conference game vs. Fremont I(41-36), but bounced back with two wins, one over Tri-County (58-32) and another CSAA White game against White Cloud (57-47) to improve to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Boys Bowling: The varsity boys bowling team tied Whitehall 15-15 on senior night in their lone competition this past week.

Varsity Girls Bowling: The varsity girls bowling team defeated state ranked Whitehall as they prepare for Regionals.

Varsity Wrestling: The varsity wrestling team won their first MHSAA Team District championship since 2023, defeating Grant 66-12 in the semifinal and Fremont 76-6 in the final.   Then on Saturday, 11 Eagles punched their ticket to the MHSAA Individual Regionals by placing in the top four: Dylan Russo (1st place), Sam Kik (1st place), Trevor McGuff (4th place), Sammy Anderson (2nd place), Travis Pike (4th place), Adam Hunter (2nd place), Jayden Loomis Sandison (4th place), Victor Vazquez (3rd place), Hunter Gustinis (4th place), Jackson Carr (4th place), and Logan Thompson (4th place).  Finally on Sunday, Brooklin Armstrong dominated her bracket winning a District title.

Key Contests

Varsity Bowling @ MHSAA Team & Individual Regionals

Wednesday, February 18 & Thursday, February 19 | 8:00 a.m. | Sherman Lanes

For the fourth consecutive season, Kent City will host the Division 3 Regionals at Sherman Lanes. Fourteen schools will converge on the 50-lane facility in Muskegon with hopes of finishing among the top two teams on Wednesday and the top seven individuals on Thursday to qualify for the State Finals the following week at Jax 60.

Last year, Lylah Larson made the cut in her first-ever Regional appearance, finishing 5th overall. She became the first Kent City female bowler to qualify for the State Finals since Madi Brake earned runner-up honors in 2023. That same season, Judd Weber qualified for the boys.

With over 150 bowlers competing each day, both the team and individual events promise two exciting and unpredictable days of competition. On Wednesday, the Eagles will roll eight Baker games and two regular games in pursuit of a team qualification. The last Kent City team to accomplish that feat was the 2022 girls squad, which won the Regional title.

Last year, Orchard View’s girls captured the Regional championship but graduated five seniors from that lineup. Runner-up Central Montcalm will not field a girls team this year. On the boys side, Central Montcalm claimed last year’s Regional title but also graduated several top contributors, while Comstock Park finished as runners-up.

Thursday’s individual event consists of six regular games. Last year’s qualifying cut was 1,094 for the boys (182.3 average) and 936 for the girls (156.0 average). The key both days is consistency. While a monster game helps, avoiding extreme lows is just as important. Staying steady and focusing on the next shot is the winning formula.

As an MHSAA postseason event, all tickets must be purchased via GoFan. Credit card readers will be available at the gate.  Here are links to purchase tickets:

Varsity Wrestling @ MHSAA Team Regionals

Wednesday, February 18, 2026 | 5:30 p.m. | The Nest

The Eagles return to Team Regionals for the first time since the 2022-23 season, when Kent City fell in the semifinals to eventual State Runner-up Whitehall Vikings. Three of the four teams from that Regional are back this year: Kent City, Tri-County, and Whitehall. The only new addition is Comstock Park.

Kent City will open the evening against Comstock Park, a team the Eagles defeated convincingly on opening night. However, much has changed since then, and the Panthers will be ready for a different outcome. On the other side of the bracket, Whitehall and Tri-County feature skilled and experienced lineups.

This past weekend’s Individual Districts at Whitehall provided a preview of the competition:

  • Kent City advanced 11 wrestlers with two District champions
  • Whitehall advanced 10 wrestlers with two District champions
  • Tri-County advanced eight wrestlers

Team Regionals always look different, as coaches strategically adjust lineups to maximize points. Wrestlers may compete at different weights than they did during Individual Districts.

The opportunity is clear: if Kent City advances past Comstock Park, they would only need to defeat either Whitehall or Tri-County to secure a spot in the next round.

As an MHSAA postseason event, all tickets must be purchased through GoFan. We will have credit card readers available, or you can purchase your ticket ahead of time at the following link: MHSAA Team Regional Wrestling – Wednesday, February 18, 2026

Varsity Girls & Boys Basketball vs. Morley Stanwood

Friday, February 20, 2026 | 5:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. | The Nest

It’s a big night in The Nest as conference rival Morley Stanwood comes to town.

In the girls game, Kent City will look to avenge a heartbreaking 64-62 early-season loss and force a tie atop the CSAA White standings. Since that matchup, the Mohawks have dropped games to Big Rapids (57-53) and Fremont (57-52). Kent City also fell to Fremont (41-36) and will face Big Rapids earlier in the week. In the first meeting, Morley Stanwood built a large first-half lead behind strong three-point shooting, and despite a late Kent City rally, the Eagles came up just short.

The boys game also carries major implications. In the first meeting, Morley Stanwood defeated Kent City 72-61. The Mohawks have a makeup game against league leader Central Montcalm earlier in the week. If they pull off an upset, a win over Kent City would force a tie for the conference title. There’s also a strong possibility these two teams could meet again next week in the MHSAA Districts — hosted at The Nest — where Morley Stanwood enters as the 2-seed and Kent City as the 3-seed.

Friday night will also feature special recognitions. We will honor our outstanding volunteers for their dedication to KCCS students, and we’ll welcome the future stars of Kent City basketball during Youth Basketball Night.
