Athletic Weekly 2-9 – 2-14

As we head into mid-winter break, Kent City athletics is entering one of the busiest and most exciting stretches of the winter season. This week sets the tone, as our wrestling program hosts MHSAA Team Wrestling Districts on Wednesday right here at Kent City. The postseason atmosphere officially begins!

What makes this run even more special is that it doesn’t stop with wrestling. Each week moving forward, another Kent City winter sport will step onto the MHSAA postseason stage—bowling next week (at Sherman Lanes), boys basketball in two weeks, and girls basketball in three weeks. Even better, Kent City will serve as the host site for all of these postseason events. If our wrestling team advances out of Team Districts on Wednesday—as expected—we will also host Team Wrestling Regionals next week.

We encourage our community to come out and support our student-athletes as they compete for championships on their home floor and lanes. Please remember that for all MHSAA postseason events, tickets must be purchased online through GoFan, as required by the MHSAA.

Week in Review

Varsity Boys Basketball: The varsity boys basketball team won two out of three games this past week to improve to 9-8 overall.   On Tuesday, Kent City traveled to Muskegon Oakridge and beat the Eagles, 66-37.  On Thursday, Kent City was eliminated from CSAA White contention, losing to Central Montcalm, 82-73.  Then on Saturday, Kent City rebounded to grab a 74-51 win over Newaygo.

Varsity Girls Basketball: The varsity girls basketball team won all three of their games this past week, and now stand at 12-3.  On Tuesday, the Eagles defeated Algoma Christian 62-20.   The next two games were much tougher, with a 47-46 win over Central Montcalm on Thursday, and a 42-36 victory over Newaygo on Saturday.

Varsity Boys Bowling: The varsity boys bowling team competed in the Regional Tune-up on Saturday at Sherman Lanes, but none of the seven bowlers made the cut following 6 regular games.

Varsity Girls Bowling: The varsity girls bowling team had seven girls bowl in the Regional Tune-up on Saturday at Sherman Lanes, and two made the cut (top 12), Lylah Larson and Sarah Beth Loew.

Varsity Wrestling: The varsity wrestling team earned some all-conference honors this past weekend at the CSAA Blue Tournament.  Placing first for the Eagles were: Dylan Russo, Sammy Anderson, Adam Hunter and Blake Carr.   Those wrestlers finishing in 2nd place were Sam Kik and Hunter Gustinis,     And those wrestlers finishing in 3rd place were Trevor McGuff, Jayden Loomis Sandison, and Victor Vazquez.

Key Contests

Varsity Girls Basketball vs. Fremont

Monday, February 9, 2026 | 7:00 p.m. | The Nest

The varsity girls basketball team will wrap up a tough stretch of the schedule with a non-league matchup against Fremont on Monday night in the Nest. After narrow victories over Central Montcalm and Newaygo on Thursday and Saturday, the Eagles now turn their attention to an 11-3 Fremont squad with an impressive résumé.

The Packers own quality wins over Ludington (11-5) and Morley Stanwood (12-2) this season, with their lone setback coming in the season opener against Hart (54-40). Kent City fell just short against Morley Stanwood (64-62) but picked up a road win at Hart in late January (64-58).

As the regular season winds down, games like this will only help prepare the Eagles for postseason play. It will be a busy week for Kent City, as the girls also travel to Tri County on Tuesday for a CSAA crossover game before heading to White Cloud on Friday for a CSAA White road contest.

Varsity Bowling vs. Whitehall (Senior Night)

Wednesday, February 11, 2026 | 3:00 p.m. | Sparta Lanes

The varsity boys and girls bowling teams will host Whitehall on Wednesday for their final regular-season match of the year. While the dual is non-league, Whitehall is traditionally strong on the lanes, and the matchup will give Kent City a preview of the level of competition they will face at next week’s Regional at Sherman Lanes.

In the latest statewide rankings, Whitehall’s boys team is ranked 7th, while the girls team sits 9th. Following the match, Kent City will pause to recognize and thank its eight seniors.

Honored seniors include Karley Eager, Lylah Larson, Sienna Larson, Sarah Beth Loew, and Maddy Mitchell for the girls, along with Bryar Armstrong, Julian Witt, and Zayne Willes for the boys.

Varsity Wrestling @ MHSAA Individual Districts

Saturday, February 14, 2026 | 10:30 a.m. | Whitehall

The varsity wrestling team begins the individual postseason on Saturday with a trip to Whitehall for the MHSAA Individual District tournament. To advance to Regionals next Saturday at Belding High School, wrestlers must place in the top four of their weight class.

A total of 15 schools will be represented, highlighted by Whitehall (ranked 2nd in Division 3), Tri County, and Kent City (ranked 5th in Division 3). District placement is important, as higher finishers will face lower-placing opponents from the opposite district at Regionals.

The goal is simple: win two matches before losing two. The Eagles are expected to send multiple wrestlers on to Individual Regionals at Belding, with final numbers determined when the dust settles at Whitehall High School.

As this is an MHSAA postseason event, all tickets must be purchased online through GoFan.
