Athletic Weekly 2-2 – 2-7

It was an outstanding week for Kent City athletics, highlighted by two CSAA Blue conference championships and strong momentum heading into a busy stretch of competition. On Wednesday, our varsity wrestling team clinched the CSAA Blue title in convincing fashion, finishing the dual season undefeated and earning the program’s first league championship since 2021–22. Adding to the celebration, our varsity girls bowling team also captured the CSAA Blue championship on Saturday, securing the title with two hard-fought dual victories over Reed City and Lakeview.

As our winter sports continue to shine, we are reminded of the importance of the positive, respectful, and supportive culture that defines Kent City athletics. Our student-athletes work tirelessly to represent our school and community with pride, and the encouragement they receive from the stands plays a meaningful role in their experience and success.

The excitement continues this week with a full slate of events. The varsity boys basketball team hosts Central Montcalm in a pivotal CSAA White matchup at The Nest, wrestling travels to Newaygo for the CSAA Blue individual championships, and both basketball programs will compete in the Newaygo County Showcase as postseason play draws closer. It’s another great opportunity to support our Eagles and celebrate all that Kent City athletics has to offer.

Week in Review

Varsity Boys Basketball: The varsity boys basketball team had a tough week, finishing 1-2.  On Wednesday, Kent City traveled to Grand River Prep and defeated the Titans, 75-50.  Then on Thursday, the Eagles hosted Hart, losing to the Pirates, 69-52.  Finally, on Saturday, Kent City lost to Fremont 68-66.  Kent City is now 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Girls Basketball: The varsity girls basketball team only had one game this past week, a road win against Hart, 64-58.  Kent City is now 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Boys Bowling: The varsity boys bowling team finished the week 3-1 in duals defeating Montague (26-4), Reed City (21-9), and Lakeview (29-1).  They lost to our western neighbors 24-6. Kent City had four bowlers earn all-conference honors: Zayne Wiles and Jayden Morales were 1st team, while Julian Witt and Corbin Rogers earned honorable mention.

Varsity Girls Bowling: The varsity girls bowling team suffered their first two losses of the season in non-league action, falling to Montague (18.5 to 11.5) and our western neighbors (25-5) on Monday and Wednesday.   On Saturday, the Eagles took care of business winning both duals, first against Reed City (23-7) and then against Lakeview (18-12) clinching the CSAA Blue championship!  The Eagles had five bowlers earn all-conference honors: Sienna Larson and Lylah Larson earned first team, while Karley Eager, Sarah Beth Loew, and Maddy Mitchell were honorable mention.

Varsity Wrestling: The varsity wrestling team finished their undefeated conference dual season in convincing fashion on senior night in the Nest on Wednesday.  First the Eagles took down a 5-1 Reed City team, 67-6.   Then in the nightcap, Kent City handed Central Montcalm their first loss with a 64-18 win.

On Saturday, Kent City traveled to the Shelby Super Duals, finishing with a 3-2 record.  Kent City defeated Fremont (76-6), Hart (39-26), and Shelby (50-29), but lost to Fruitport (42-24) and Muskegon Reeths Puffer (36-35) .

Key Contests

Varsity Boys Basketball vs. Central Montcalm

Thursday, February 5, 2026 | 7:00 p.m. | The Nest

The varsity boys basketball team will have a chance to avenge an earlier season loss to divisional rival Central Montcalm on Thursday night as the Hornets travel to The Nest for a varsity-varsity doubleheader.

Kent City’s varsity girls will tip off at 5:30 p.m. against Central Montcalm, a team they defeated convincingly in their first meeting, 50–24. The varsity boys will follow, looking to stay alive in the CSAA White title race.

Kent City dropped a tight 51–48 decision to the Hornets back in December. Central Montcalm enters the night with a 13-1 overall record and a perfect 5-0 mark in the CSAA White. Their lone loss came against Grant in a battle of unbeatens, 82–56.

Kent City is 7-7 overall and 2-2 in league play. For the Eagles to have a chance at sharing the 2025-26 CSAA White championship, they must win out—including victories over Central Montcalm and Morley Stanwood—and get some help elsewhere in the division.

Crazier things have happened, and it all starts Thursday night at The Nest.

Varsity Wrestling at CSAA Blue Tourney (@ Newaygo)

Saturday, February 7, 2026 | 10:30 a.m.

The freshly crowned CSAA Blue champions head to Newaygo on Saturday to determine individual all-conference honors at the league championships.

Kent City finished the dual season with a perfect 8-0 record, earning its first conference championship since 2021-22. While the tournament does not affect final team standings, the Eagles enter as favorites to win the individual title as well.

To earn all-conference honors, wrestlers must finish in the top three:

  • Champion – 1st Team All-Conference
  • Runner-up – 2nd Team All-Conference
  • Consolation Champion – Honorable Mention

Last season, Kent City had six all-conference wrestlers, including champions Hunter Gustinis and Derek Rodenburg. Five of those six return this year, along with several others who narrowly missed qualifying or were not yet in high school.

Look for five more Eagles to reach the podium this season, giving Kent City a projected total of 10 medalists.

Varsity Girls Basketball @ White Cloud (vs. Newaygo)

Saturday, February 7, 2026 | 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the varsity girls and boys basketball teams will travel to White Cloud for the Newaygo County Showcase. While Kent City resides in Kent County, the Eagles were invited due to long-standing rivalries with Newaygo County schools.

The varsity boys will play first at 3:00 p.m. against the struggling Lions (2-12).

Then, the varsity girls will face Newaygo, which enters the contest at 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the CSAA Red. The Lions’ lone conference loss came against Big Rapids (45-30), a team Kent City has yet to face.

Newaygo and Kent City share several common opponents:

  • Morley Stanwood (Newaygo L, 50-32 | Kent City L, 64-62)
  • Hart (Newaygo L, 48-38 | Kent City W, 64-58)
  • Central Montcalm (Newaygo W, 50-49 | Kent City W, 50-24)
  • Reed City (Newaygo W, 47-34 | Kent City W, 50-31)

The neutral-site matchup against a quality opponent provides a strong test as the Eagles prepare for the MHSAA tournament.

The showcase features six total games:

  1. Grant vs. Fremont – 12:00 p.m. (boys) 1:30 p.m. (girls)
  2. Kent City vs. Newaygo – 3:00 p.m. (boys) 4:30 p.m. (girls)
  3. White Cloud vs. Hesperia – 6:00 p.m. (boys) 7:30 p.m. (girls)
