Athletic Weekly 1-26 - 1-31
This week’s focus is on two teams with a chance to clinch a conference championship: varsity girls bowling and varsity wrestling. While all of our winter teams remain in the hunt for a league title, these two have been perfect to this point. When the match has been on the line, they’ve made the plays and hit the shots needed to secure victories.
The challenges ahead will not be easy (more on that below), but both teams are just steps away from the summit. Make it a point this week to wish these bowlers and wrestlers good luck and to come out and support them on their quest for a conference title. Wrestling will be in the Nest on Wednesday, and the bowlers will take the lanes at Remus Lanes on Saturday.
As for our other winter teams that have taken a conference loss or two, nothing has been decided yet. Keep battling one game at a time—and who knows, we may even get a little help from our friends along the way.

Key Contests
Varsity Wrestling vs. Reed City & Central Montcalm (Senior Night)
Wednesday, January 28, 2026 | 5:00 p.m. | The Nest
The varsity wrestling team can put the finishing touches on a conference championship Wednesday night in the Nest as Reed City and Central Montcalm visit Kent City. The Eagles have not won a conference title since the 2021–22 season, the final year wrestling was split into two divisions before Hesperia and Holton departed for the West Michigan Conference. Kent City’s best finish during that stretch was third place last season.
Both Reed City and Central Montcalm enter the night with just one conference loss through six duals, each falling to Tri County. Kent City narrowly defeated the Vikings back in December and has cruised through conference matchups since then.
It should be a fun and memorable night, as middle school wrestlers will compete on an adjacent mat and the Eagles will honor their senior wrestlers in their final home, regular-season match.
Varsity Girls Basketball @ Hart
Thursday, January 29, 2026 | 7:00 p.m.
Two of Division 3’s premier girls basketball programs over the past five seasons meet once again as Kent City travels to Hart for a non-league matchup after a one-year hiatus.
The last meeting in 2024 went to overtime, with the Eagles edging the Pirates 52–46. That game followed a pair of memorable 2023 matchups, where Kent City won the regular-season meeting before Hart earned regional-final revenge on its way to the Breslin Center.
While much has changed since those meetings, one thing remains the same: both programs continue to play outstanding basketball. Kent City enters the week at 8–3, while Hart stands at 7–2. The Pirates’ only losses came against Shelby (49–38) and Kent City’s western neighbors (56–50 in overtime). The Eagles defeated those same neighbors 53–43 back in December during an all-day basketball marathon.
Playing on the road will be a strong test for Kent City as the Eagles enter the final month of the season before the MHSAA playoffs begin in early March.
Varsity Bowling @ Remus Lanes (vs. Reed City & Lakeview)
Saturday, January 31, 2026 | 11:00 a.m.
The varsity bowling teams travel to Remus Lanes on Saturday for their final conference event of the 2025–26 season, with conference titles still on the line.
The varsity girls remain undefeated overall and in conference play and can clinch Kent City’s second conference championship of the season (with a wrestling win Wednesday) by defeating Reed City and Lakeview. Reed City also enters undefeated in conference play at 4–0, with four of their top five bowlers carrying averages comparable to Kent City’s. The difference comes at the fifth spot, where all seven Kent City bowlers hold higher averages than Reed City’s fifth bowler. Lakeview could also present a challenge, as they feature the top individual bowler in the conference.
On the boys’ side, Kent City must win both matches to keep its hopes alive for at least a chance to tie Chippewa Hills for the conference title. The Warriors defeated the Eagles in early January and currently lead the seven-team race. Reed City is tied with Kent City at 3–1 and also has a path to a title tie with two wins Saturday and a Chippewa Hills loss.
Kent City’s top three bowlers each carry higher averages than Reed City’s top bowler, but the Coyotes have an advantage in the middle of the lineup and could cause problems, especially if the Baker games do not go well. Lakeview should not pose much of a challenge, as they are one bowler short of a full team.
There is no doubt the Eagles will need to be ready when the lights come on in the pin deck Saturday.
