Athletic Weekly 1-12 - 1-17
As the winter season continues to unfold, Kent City winter sports are right where you’d expect a competitive program to be—tested, battle-ready, and positioned for meaningful moments down the stretch. From championship implications on the mat, to rivalry showdowns on the hardwood, to individual accolades being decided on the lanes, our Eagles are learning that success is built through consistency, focus, and responding the right way to every challenge.
Whether it’s wrestling navigating a championship-caliber opponent on the road, basketball teams stepping into electric conference environments with league standings on the line, or bowlers competing for all-conference honors in the final jamboree, the message is the same: stay the course. These experiences—both the wins and the adversity—are shaping who we are as teams. With plenty of season still ahead, how we compete, prepare, and support one another will determine how these stories ultimately finish.
Week in Review
Varsity Boys Basketball: The varsity boys basketball team picked up a win in their only game last week, defeating White Cloud. Kent City is now 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the CSAA White.
Varsity Girls Basketball: The varsity girls basketball team earned two lopsided victories last week, first over Muskegon Oakridge, 67-35 and then over White Cloud, 45-14. Kent City is now 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the CSAA White.
Varsity Boys Bowling: The varsity boys bowling team competed in their second jamboree of the season. Zayne Wiles finished in 1st place followed by Jayden Morales in 6th place and Corbin Rogers in 7th place. Kent City is 3-1 in the CSAA Blue.
Varsity Girls Bowling: The varsity girls bowling team also bowled in their 2nd jamboree of the season. At the end of the day Maddy Mitchell was 6th place, Lylah Larson was 8th place, Emery Kruithoff was 10th place, and Karley Eager was 11th place. Kent City is in first place in the CSAA Blue with a 4-0 record.
Varsity Wrestling: The varsity wrestling team had two events last week. First a school assembly dual at Hopkins where Kent City spoiled the fun for the Vikings, winning 46-20. Then on Saturday at the Sparta Invitational, Kent City finished in 5th place out of 20 schools, with four wrestlers in the top three: Dylan Russo, Sam Kik, and Sammy Anderson in 2nd place, and Blake Carr in 3rd place. Kent City is now 15-5 overall in duals and 2-0 in the CSAA Blue.
Key Contests
Varsity Wrestling @ CSAA Blue Tri (@ Lakeview) vs. Lakeview & Newaygo
Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.
In their first CSAA Blue tri back in December, the Eagles cleared an early hurdle by defeating both Big Rapids (49–25) and Tri County (44–26). Now comes the next challenge: a showdown with two-time defending CSAA Blue champion Lakeview—on the Wildcats’ home mat.
Lakeview once again brings strong numbers to the lineup, even after graduating several standout wrestlers who helped propel them to the top of the league in recent years. Kent City cannot afford to overlook the Wildcats in this double dual. Winning breeds winning, and Lakeview has a proven history of doing just that on the wrestling mat.
A victory on Wednesday would move the Eagles one step closer to a CSAA Blue championship. Even with two wins on Wednesday, Kent City will need to remain focused and continue to take it one dual at a time.
Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball @ Morley Stanwood
Friday, January 16, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. (Varsity Girls) and 7:00 p.m. (Varsity Boys)
Here we go again. The Eagles head north to take on conference archrival Morley Stanwood in a pivotal CSAA White matchup for both the varsity girls and boys basketball teams.
Girls Basketball
The girls contest features two undefeated CSAA White teams, as both Kent City and Morley Stanwood enter at 2–0 in league play. Overall, the Mohawks are 6–0, while the Eagles sit at 6–2. The teams share a common opponent in White Cloud. Morley Stanwood defeated the Indians 59–41 earlier this season, while Kent City dominated White Cloud last week, 45–14.
Kent City’s two losses have come against elite competition—Niles Brandywine and Covenant Christian—teams that are a combined 15–0. Morley Stanwood has one win over a team with a winning record (Reed City), which mirrors the Eagles’ résumé with a victory over Ravenna. With both teams unbeaten in conference play, this matchup will go a long way toward shaping the CSAA White title race.
Boys Basketball
On the boys side, this is a must-have game for Kent City after dropping a CSAA White contest to Central Montcalm just before the holiday break. Both teams are currently 2–1 in conference play. Morley Stanwood enters at 5–3 overall, while the Eagles are 3–4.
Both squads have faced Central Montcalm, Lakeview, and White Cloud. Kent City fell to Central Montcalm in heartbreaking fashion, 51–48, while the Mohawks dropped a one-sided decision to the Hornets, 65–38. Each team has victories over Lakeview and White Cloud, but Kent City’s 60–44 win over Lakeview came roughly a week after Morley Stanwood suffered a 55–37 loss to the Wildcats.
Playing on the road in what is sure to be an electric atmosphere, Kent City will need to be ready from the opening tip to stay in the conference race—and potentially set the tone for at least one, and possibly two more meetings with our friends from the north, including a potential showdown in the MHSAA Districts.
Varsity Bowling @ CSAA Blue Jamboree (@ Sparta Lanes)
Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 8:00 a.m.
In the final CSAA Blue Jamboree of the 2025–26 season, the Eagles have nine bowlers between the boys and girls teams in contention for all-conference honors when the dust settles. Saturday’s six regular games will go a long way toward cementing the final individual standings.
To earn all-conference recognition, bowlers must compete in at least 21 games throughout the season, with both average and total pinfall used to determine the league’s top performers. The top nine bowlers will earn First Team All-Conference honors, while those finishing 10th–14th will receive Honorable Mention.
On the boys side, four Eagles currently sit in the mix: Zayne Wiles (1st), Jayden Morales (3rd), Julian Witt (11th), and Corbin Rogers (14th). For the girls, five Eagles rank in the top 14: Lylah Larson (3rd), Maddy Mitchell (10th), Emery Kruithoff (11th), Sienna Larson (12th), and Sarah Beth Loew (14th).
Bowling at Sparta Lanes should provide a home-lane advantage for the Eagles. Action begins at 8:00 a.m. and should wrap up just in time to grab a well-earned—and delicious—lunch at The Patch.
