Athletic Weekly 1-5 - 1-10

Happy New Year!   We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and spent some time with family and friends.

A new year means new goals, fresh motivation, and maybe a few sore muscles along the way. While the calendar flips to January, the work doesn’t reset—it refocuses. This is the time of the season when practice habits matter, confidence grows, and goals start turning into results. Whether it’s chasing personal bests, team milestones, or just being better than you were yesterday, the new year is a perfect time to lean into the grind. Let’s see what 2026 has in store for Eagle athletics.

Week in Review

Varsity Boys Basketball: The varsity boys basketball team ran into two tough teams leading up to the break, losing both games, first on Tuesday at Grant (70-62) and at Central Montcalm (51-48).  Kent City is now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Girls Basketball: The varsity girls basketball team had a busy two weeks with four games.   Kent City finished 2-2 during that time span, defeating Grant (57-24), Central Montcalm (50-24), and losing the Niles Brandywine (42-60) and Covenant Christian (34-30).   Kent City is now 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Boys Bowling: The varsity boys bowling pulled off a thrilling 16-14 win over league rivals, Central Montcalm in Big Rapids.   Then last Saturday, the Eagles faced Tri-County and Chippewa Hills at the Greenville Hotspot.  The Eagles defeated Tri-County but fell to a tough Warriors squad.   Kent City is 3-1 in the CSAA Blue.

Varsity Girls Bowling: The varsity girls bowling team easily defeated the shorthanded Hornets, 30-0 in Big Rapids.   Then on Saturday at the Greenville Hotspot the Eagles took down both Tri-County and Chippewa HIlls to remain on top of the CSAA Blue with a 4-0 record.

Varsity Wrestling: The varsity wrestling team continues to impress with two big conference wins entering the break, first over Big Rapids 49-25 and then over Tri-County (44-26).   At the Northview Invitational, the Eagles defeated Grand Rapids Christian, Zeeland West, Wayland B, and Mona Shores, and then lost in the championship match against Howell.   On Saturday at the Fruitport Legends Invitational, Kent City ran into some tough competition, finishing 1-4.   The Eagles defeated Grant (57-9), but then lost to Greenville (42-26), Fruitport (42-30), Muskegon Reeths Puffer (38-32), and Portland (40-35)   Kent City is now  14-5 overall in duals and 2-0 in the CSAA Blue.

Key Contests

Varsity Girls Basketball vs. White Cloud

Friday, January 9, 2026 at 5:30 p.m.

The Eagles will host their first Friday home game of the 2025–26 season in a varsity doubleheader against league foe White Cloud. The Indians have experienced their share of ups and downs over the years, but with a young and talented roster, White Cloud appears to be on the rise once again.

Expect a much improved Indian squad compared to last season, when the Eagles earned 25-point (53–28) and 18-point (45–27) victories. White Cloud enters the contest at 1–1 on the season, with a loss to Morley Stanwood and a win over Tri-County.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are still settling in early this season, with no common opponents on the schedule to date. Guard play will be a key factor, as ball security will be critical after turnovers proved costly for Kent City in its loss at Kalamazoo College and against Covenant Christian.

Varsity Bowling @ CSAA Blue Jamboree (@ Greenville Hot Spot)

Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.

The Eagles will head to the Greenville Hot Spot for the third time this season as they compete in their second of three CSAA Jamborees. Each team may enter six bowlers, with each bowler rolling six regular games that count toward season totals and help determine all-conference honors.

After the first jamboree—also held at the Greenville Hot Spot—Kent City placed five bowlers in the top ten: Jayden Morales (1st), Lylah Larson (4th), Julian Witt (6th), Zayne Wiles (9th), and Maddy Mitchell (10th).

All is not lost for the remaining Eagle bowlers, as one strong day can quickly vault a competitor back into contention—or just as easily shift the standings in the other direction. Success at the jamborees often comes down to mental toughness. Bowlers must maintain focus throughout a long day, embracing a “next ball” mentality in a sport that relies heavily on individual technique and consistency.

Varsity Wrestling @ Sparta Invitational

Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.

One of the largest tournaments on the Eagles’ schedule, the 21-team Sparta Invitational is always a strong test for Kent City’s wrestlers. In 2025, the Eagles recorded six top-four finishes, highlighted by Jayden Loomis Sandison advancing to the championship match and earning a second-place finish.

Five additional wrestlers competed in the consolation finals, including four who return to the mat this Saturday: Trevor McGuff (4th), Adam Hunter (4th), Sammy Anderson (4th), and Hunter Gustinis (3rd).

Expect the Eagles to bring home even more medals this year, including additional appearances in championship matches. Kent City is a much-improved squad from a team that was already solid a season ago. If team scores are included, look for Kent City to be near the top, as the Eagles have already defeated a majority of the teams in the field, with the lone exception being Cedar Springs at the Kent County Classic. A tough individual tournament is a great way to start the new year!
