Athletic Weekly 12-15 - 1-3
In this final edition of 2025, we take an extended look at what lies ahead for Kent City Athletics—both in the upcoming week and throughout the holiday break.
While the calendar allows for some well-earned time off, the focus remains on building upon the foundation established back in November. That continued growth will be critical as we return in January and push toward our championship aspirations.
We hope everyone enjoys a wonderful and restful holiday season. If early-season results are any indication, it could be a very Happy New Year for the Eagles.
Despite a week shortened by weather, Kent City athletes delivered several strong performances. With pivotal contests on the horizon over the next three weeks, the Eagles have an opportunity to set the tone for what could be another historic season.
Stay safe, enjoy the holidays, and if we don’t see you over the break, we’ll see you in the New Year—ready to soar.
Week in Review
Varsity Boys Basketball: The varsity boys basketball team played in two non-league games this past week and again finished 1-1. On Thursday, the Eagles lost to Sparta, 62-54. Then on Saturday, Kent City picked up their first win in four tries over our western neighbors, 60-44. Kent City is now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the CSAA White.
Varsity Girls Basketball: The varsity girls basketball team kicked off their season in style, finishing the week 2-0. On Thursday, Kent City traveled to Sparta and defeated the host Spartans 36-23. Then on Saturday, Kent City improved their record to 8-0 over the past 10 years with a 53-43 victory over our western neighbors.
Varsity Boys Bowling: The varsity boys bowling team suffered their first loss of the 2025-26 season on Monday against Forest HIlls Central. Then on Saturday, the boys had three bowlers finish in the top 10 at the first CSAA White Jamboree at the Greenville Hotspot: Jayden Morales (1st), Julian Witt (6th) and Zayne Wiles (9th).
Varsity Girls Bowling: The varsity girls bowling team defeated Forest Hills Central on Monday to improve to 3-0 in duals on the season. Then on Saturday at the first of three CSAA Blue Jamborees, Kent City had two bowlers finish in the top 10 after six games: Lylah Larson (4th) and Maddy Mitchell (10th).
Varsity Wrestling: The varsity wrestling team turned in a historic day for Kent City at the Kent County Championships at East Kentwood on Saturday. The Eagles finished 3rd overall out of 24 teams, and advanced five wrestlers to the finals and four more wrestlers to the consolation finals. Five wrestlers finished in 2nd place: Dylan Russo (106), Sam Kik (113), Sammy Anderson (132), Adam Hunter (138), and Jackson Carr (175); two wrestlers in third place: Trevor McGuff (120) and Hunter Gustinis (150); and two wrestlers in 4th place: Brooklin Armstrong (125) and Jayden Loomis Sandison (144).
Key Contests
Varsity Boys Basketball @ Grant and @ Central Montcalm
@ Grant — Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
@ Central Montcalm – Friday, December 19, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
The Kent City Eagles varsity boys basketball team closes out 2025 with a daunting two-game road stretch against a pair of unbeaten opponents who enter the week a combined 8-0.
The challenge begins Tuesday night with a non-league rivalry showdown against the Grant Tigers. Grant is off to a perfect 4-0 start, highlighted by narrow wins over Cedar Springs (53-52) and Belding (54-51), along with CSAA Red victories against Tri-County and Newaygo. The Tigers were a force a season ago, finishing 20-3 and handing Kent City a 60-51 loss in the Nest. With rivalry bragging rights on the line, expect an intense atmosphere in Grant.
The Eagles will then turn their attention to a massive CSAA White matchup Friday night, traveling to Central Montcalm to face the Hornets. Like Grant, Central Montcalm enters the week unbeaten at 4-0. The Hornets made an early statement with a dominant 65-38 win over Morley Stanwood and have also defeated Ithaca, Vestaburg, and Lakeview (54-40).
Last season’s meetings between Kent City and Central Montcalm were memorable. The Eagles needed overtime to escape with a 79-73 win in the Nest before asserting themselves later in the year with a convincing 58-32 victory. Friday’s contest carries major conference implications, as the winner will take a firm grip on first place in the CSAA White heading into January.
Varsity Wrestling @ CSAA Blue Tri (@ Tri-County) vs. Big Rapids and Tri-County
Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at 5:00 p.m.
The road to a CSAA Blue wrestling championship will once again run through Tri-County, as the Kent City Eagles head to Howard City on Wednesday night for a pivotal conference tri with the Vikings.
Kent City will wrestle second and third on the night, opening the action against a solid Big Rapids Cardinals squad before closing with a highly anticipated dual against Tri-County. A season ago, the Vikings handed the Eagles one of their two CSAA Blue losses, with the other coming against eventual champion Lakeview.
If Wednesday’s matchup resembles past meetings, the dual with Tri-County is likely to be decided by just one or two bouts. This year, however, those crucial points will be earned on the mat rather than by default. For the first time in recent seasons, the Eagles enter the matchup with a full lineup, avoiding the automatic 12 or more points they’ve often surrendered due to open weights.
Both teams are built similarly, featuring strength in the lower weights, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive night in Howard City. With so much on the line, Wednesday’s dual could very well determine the 2025 CSAA Blue champion.
Varsity Girls Basketball @ Central Montcalm & @ Kalamazoo College (vs. Niles Brandywine)
@ Central Montcalm – Friday, December 19, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
@ Kalamazoo College (vs. Niles Brandywine) – Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
The Kent City varsity girls basketball team will begin the holiday break with a crucial CSAA White matchup and close it with two challenging non-league tests that should pay dividends come postseason play.
The stretch begins Friday night as the Eagles travel to Central Montcalm to take on a young but talented Hornets squad that has opened the season 2-0. Central Montcalm impressed in its first week with victories over Ithaca (52-40) and Lakeview (77-31), setting the stage for a key early conference battle.
Over the break, Kent City will then travel to Kalamazoo College for a neutral-site showdown against Niles Brandywine. The Bobcats bring a strong pedigree, having reached the Breslin Center in each of the past two seasons—falling to Ypsilanti Arbor Prep in the Division 3 Finals during the 2023–24 season and again in last year’s semifinals. Brandywine is off to a fast start in 2025 as well, opening 2-0 with decisive wins over White Pigeon (58-20) and Dowagiac (68-31).
The matchup at Kalamazoo College is meaningful on multiple levels. Located roughly halfway between the two schools, the venue provides a true neutral site and offers the Eagles the opportunity to compete on a college campus against a high-caliber opponent. This game has been in the works for several years, making its arrival especially exciting.
To close out the break, the Eagles will return home to the Nest to host Covenant Christian, another quality non-league opponent, capping off a demanding and valuable stretch of the schedule.
With conference positioning and postseason preparation both in focus, the holiday break promises to be an important measuring stick for the Eagles
