Athletic Weekly 12-8 - 12-13

It was a GREAT start to our winter season, with the Eagles finishing 12–1 overall in thirteen contests during the opening week. Even more exciting is the rise in participation across our programs.

This was especially noticeable on Friday at the 34th Annual Kent City Wrestling Kickoff Classic. For the first time ever, Kent City fielded two teams in the season-opening tournament. This allowed twice as many student-athletes to gain valuable experience on the mat.

On Saturday at Sheridan Lanes, our varsity bowling teams also benefited from strong numbers in 2025–26. The Eagles were able to sub in bowlers during their match against Big Rapids—an approach that not only helped the team, but also provided important competitive reps for underclassmen who are developing into future contributors. This healthy competition for varsity spots is both welcomed and encouraged.

We want as many Kent City students as possible to have opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities because of the important role they play in a well-rounded education. Additionally, the increased experience and internal competition will only make us stronger and help ensure we continue to enjoy weeks where our varsity teams finish with 12–1 records!

Week in Review

Varsity Boys Basketball: The varsity boys basketball team finished their first week 1-1.  On Tuesday, the Eagles traveled to Leroy Pine River and lost in a close game to the Bucks, 53-52.  Then on Friday, the Eagles bounced back in their first CSAA White matchup in the season, defeating Lakeview, 70-20.  Kent City is 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Boys Bowling: The varsity boys bowling team started the season off 2-0 with wins over Mason County Central on Wednesday in non-league action, and then again in the CSAA Blue against Big Rapids on Saturday.   Kent City is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the CSAA Blue.

Varsity Girls Bowling: The varsity girls bowling team also defeated Mason County Central in non-league action, 30-0 and then beat Big Rapids on Saturday in their first CSAA Blue action of the season.   The Eagles are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the CSAA Blue.

Varsity Wrestling: The varsity wrestling team had a dominating opening week, finishing 7-0, including a win at the 34th annual Kent City Kickoff Classic on Friday.  On Wednesday, Kent City cruised by both Montabella and Comstock Park in their opening dual.  Then on Friday, the Eagles dominated all teams, defeating Whitehall B, Fremont, Cedar Springs B, and Rockford B, before taking down Sparta in the championship crossover, 75-6.

Key Contests

Varsity Wrestling @ 34th Annual Kent City Kickoff Classic Wrestling Tournament

Friday, December 5, 2025 at 4:00 p.m.

As is tradition, the varsity wrestling team will compete in the Nest twice this coming week—first on Wednesday for their annual season-opening quad featuring Comstock Park, Montabella, and Muskegon Catholic Central, and then again on Friday for the 34th annual Kent City Kickoff Classic Wrestling Tournament.

Wednesday’s quad will offer the first look at an Eagles lineup that appears strong from top to bottom. Kent City returns four all-state wrestlers—Sam Kik, Brooklin Armstrong, Sammy Anderson, and Adam Hunter—along with several others who narrowly missed qualifying for Ford Field last season. Add in a talented freshman class, and this winter has the makings of an exciting campaign.

Friday’s team tournament will include seven programs and one hybrid team: Cedar Springs B, Fremont, North Muskegon, Rockford B, Sparta, and Whitehall B. Kent City finished fourth a year ago, falling to Cedar Springs and Sparta; this season, a rematch from last year’s consolation bracket could very well take place again—only this time with a tournament championship on the line.

Action begins at 4:00 p.m. on four mats, with each team wrestling four times throughout the night. If you’re looking to get your fill of high school wrestling this week, the Nest is absolutely the place to be!

Varsity Boys Basketball @ Lakeview

Friday, December 5, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.

The varsity boys basketball team opens its 2025–26 season with a pair of road contests: a non-league matchup at Leroy Pine River on Tuesday, followed by a CSAA White showdown at Lakeview on Friday.

Leroy Pine River should provide a strong early-season test for the Eagles. The Bucks finished 19–6 last year and fell to McBain in a 48–47 overtime heartbreaker in the Regional Semifinals.

On Friday, Kent City begins its defense of the 2024–25 CSAA White title with a visit to Lakeview. The Eagles controlled both meetings with the Wildcats last season, winning 64–39 on the road before posting a 60–34 victory at home.

Although many players will enter the season with limited practice time due to the extended football campaign, the large core of returning veterans should help ensure a smooth transition into basketball.

Varsity Boys & Girls Bowling @ Sheridan Lanes (vs. Big Rapids)

Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. (Boys) and 1:00 p.m. (Girls)

The varsity bowling teams will open CSAA Blue competition on Saturday at Sheridan Lanes in a split session. The varsity boys will take on Big Rapids at 9:00 a.m., followed by the varsity girls facing the Cardinals at 1:00 p.m.

Both Kent City squads enter the season as defending co-champions. Last winter, the boys shared the CSAA Blue title with Chippewa Hills and Central Montcalm, while the girls finished tied with Central Montcalm. Given how tight the standings were a year ago, Saturday’s matchups with Big Rapids are poised to play a major role in shaping this year’s conference race.

The Eagles edged the Cardinals in both duals last season—19-11 on the girls’ side and a narrow 16-14 victory for the boys. Kent City returns two of its top three bowlers from the 2024–25 campaign in senior Zayne Wiles and junior Jayden Morales, while Big Rapids graduated its top two bowlers. For the girls, the Eagles bring back one all-conference performer in senior Lylah Larson, with Big Rapids returning one top bowler of their own.

One factor that could give Kent City an early-season boost is Wednesday’s non-league home dual at Sparta Lanes against Mason County Central. The midweek tune-up should serve as a valuable test run and provide added confidence heading into Saturday’s conference opener.
