Athletic Weekly 12-1 - 12-6
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and was able to spend time with family—and enjoy some great food, of course! We now march into the winter sports season with three of our varsity teams in action this week: boys basketball, boys/girls bowling, and wrestling.
Our winter teams certainly have a tough act to follow after the remarkable success of our fall teams in 2025—one of the best fall seasons in the history of our school. Last year’s winter season also set a high bar, producing four conference titles (boys/girls basketball and boys/girls bowling) and a District championship in girls basketball.
While we are proud of all we have achieved, this is not the time to be satisfied. Living in the past will not help us accomplish what lies ahead. Instead, we must build upon the strong foundation that has been laid across all sports. How can we elevate what we’ve already created? We know what it takes to be successful, and now we must come together as a community to ensure our student-athletes commit to those habits: giving full effort in practice, making time for the weight room, maintaining proper nutrition and sleep, studying film—both opponents and themselves—and trusting in the plans their coaches have worked hard to develop. These are just a few ingredients that contribute to Excellence.
When this winter season concludes in March, we want to look back with pride, knowing we did EVERYTHING possible to be successful—not with regret that we had more to give.
Let’s bring our best every day. Let’s keep building. Let’s make this winter one to celebrate.
Key Contests
Varsity Wrestling @ 34th Annual Kent City Kickoff Classic Wrestling Tournament
Friday, December 5, 2025 at 4:00 p.m.
As is tradition, the varsity wrestling team will compete in the Nest twice this coming week—first on Wednesday for their annual season-opening quad featuring Comstock Park, Montabella, and Muskegon Catholic Central, and then again on Friday for the 34th annual Kent City Kickoff Classic Wrestling Tournament.
Wednesday’s quad will offer the first look at an Eagles lineup that appears strong from top to bottom. Kent City returns four all-state wrestlers—Sam Kik, Brooklin Armstrong, Sammy Anderson, and Adam Hunter—along with several others who narrowly missed qualifying for Ford Field last season. Add in a talented freshman class, and this winter has the makings of an exciting campaign.
Friday’s team tournament will include seven programs and one hybrid team: Cedar Springs B, Fremont, North Muskegon, Rockford B, Sparta, and Whitehall B. Kent City finished fourth a year ago, falling to Cedar Springs and Sparta; this season, a rematch from last year’s consolation bracket could very well take place again—only this time with a tournament championship on the line.
Action begins at 4:00 p.m. on four mats, with each team wrestling four times throughout the night. If you’re looking to get your fill of high school wrestling this week, the Nest is absolutely the place to be!
Varsity Boys Basketball @ Lakeview
Friday, December 5, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
The varsity boys basketball team opens its 2025–26 season with a pair of road contests: a non-league matchup at Leroy Pine River on Tuesday, followed by a CSAA White showdown at Lakeview on Friday.
Leroy Pine River should provide a strong early-season test for the Eagles. The Bucks finished 19–6 last year and fell to McBain in a 48–47 overtime heartbreaker in the Regional Semifinals.
On Friday, Kent City begins its defense of the 2024–25 CSAA White title with a visit to Lakeview. The Eagles controlled both meetings with the Wildcats last season, winning 64–39 on the road before posting a 60–34 victory at home.
Although many players will enter the season with limited practice time due to the extended football campaign, the large core of returning veterans should help ensure a smooth transition into basketball.
Varsity Boys & Girls Bowling @ Sheridan Lanes (vs. Big Rapids)
Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. (Boys) and 1:00 p.m. (Girls)
The varsity bowling teams will open CSAA Blue competition on Saturday at Sheridan Lanes in a split session. The varsity boys will take on Big Rapids at 9:00 a.m., followed by the varsity girls facing the Cardinals at 1:00 p.m.
Both Kent City squads enter the season as defending co-champions. Last winter, the boys shared the CSAA Blue title with Chippewa Hills and Central Montcalm, while the girls finished tied with Central Montcalm. Given how tight the standings were a year ago, Saturday’s matchups with Big Rapids are poised to play a major role in shaping this year’s conference race.
The Eagles edged the Cardinals in both duals last season—19-11 on the girls’ side and a narrow 16-14 victory for the boys. Kent City returns two of its top three bowlers from the 2024–25 campaign in senior Zayne Wiles and junior Jayden Morales, while Big Rapids graduated its top two bowlers. For the girls, the Eagles bring back one all-conference performer in senior Lylah Larson, with Big Rapids returning one top bowler of their own.
One factor that could give Kent City an early-season boost is Wednesday’s non-league home dual at Sparta Lanes against Mason County Central. The midweek tune-up should serve as a valuable test run and provide added confidence heading into Saturday’s conference opener.
