Athletic Weekly 11-10 – 11-15
Friday was one for the history books! The Eagles proved once again why they remain unbeaten, overcoming several setbacks and roadblocks that would have derailed other teams.
Before an enormous crowd, Kent City handed top-seeded Belding their second loss of the season. It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. For starters, this marked the Eagles’ second consecutive road game in the MHSAA playoffs — a challenge they certainly didn’t deserve, but one that didn’t faze them either.
After the opening kickoff was returned for a Belding touchdown and Kent City’s first drive stalled, a bit of doubt spread through the visitor stands. Our team and coaches had other plans, they said NO PROBLEM! The Eagles answered back with their own special teams spark, pinning the Black Knights at their own 1-yard line. A botched snap on the ensuing punt led to a safety — and Kent City quickly turned that momentum into six more points.
Late in the first half, an Eagle turnover deep in their own territory looked worrisome. NO PROBLEM! The defense held firm, forcing Belding into a long field goal attempt that came up short.
The second half was more of the same grit and adjustment. Belding was determined to shut down Kent City’s best play, but the Eagles found other ways to attack. After taking the lead in the third quarter, Kent City saw Belding respond — again, NO PROBLEM! The Eagles methodically burned nearly nine minutes off the fourth-quarter clock before punching in another touchdown and a two-point conversion to reclaim the lead.
Belding made one last push, driving all the way to the Eagle 15-yard line with time running out, using an arsenal of new plays. NO PROBLEM! The Eagles dialed up pressure, the defense held, and the game was sealed.
And on the long ride home, one song kept playing in my head:
“Country roads, take me HOME, to the place I BELONG…”
That’s right, Eagle Nation — Kent City is coming home for one final time in the Regional Finals this Saturday at Ward Memorial Field!
If you missed Friday’s game, I might not believe you — it felt like the whole town was there! Saturday is your chance to witness history being made in our community.
In a world so quick to point fingers and make excuses, this team does none of that. They just WIN — one game at a time!

Varsity Football vs. Montrose (MHSAA Playoffs)
Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 1:00 p.m.
History will be made this weekend as Kent City hosts its first-ever Regional Championship at Ward Memorial Field. The undefeated Eagles (11-0) welcome another unbeaten powerhouse, the Montrose Rams (11-0), in what promises to be a hard-hitting, high-stakes matchup between two programs built on toughness.
Montrose enters the Regional round with a storied pedigree—33 playoff appearances, two state championships (1998 and 2002), and a lineage of legendary coaches. From Tony Annese, who led the Rams to eight straight undefeated regular seasons and later became Ferris State University’s national championship coach, to Hall of Fame Coach Dennis Reinhart, still leading the charge today, Montrose football has long been synonymous with excellence.
The Rams have rolled through their competition this fall, outscoring opponents 463–62. Their closest game came in a 14-10 win over Ovid-Elsie, a team that fell to both Tri-County and Belding (1st round of playoffs) earlier in the year. With dominant playoff wins over Flint New Standard Academy (52-8) and Durand (49-16), Montrose brings balance, size, and explosive skill players to the field—anchored by a standout sophomore quarterback who burst onto the scene during last year’s postseason run.
For Kent City, this game represents the next step in an unforgettable journey. The Eagles’ physical defense and clock-controlling ground attack will be key to keeping Montrose’s potent offense on the sideline. Winning the time of possession battle and maintaining composure in key moments will be critical if the Eagles hope to extend their historic season.
Because Montrose is traveling more than 75 miles, the game will be played on Saturday at their request, per MHSAA regulations. Fans are reminded that this is an MHSAA postseason event—all tickets must be purchased via GoFan at the provided link. No passes will be accepted. Purchase Tickets HERE
Two unbeaten teams. One Regional crown. A community behind them. On Saturday, Ward Memorial Field will be the center of Michigan high school football as Kent City looks to keep the magic alive.
