Athletic Weekly 11-3 – 11-8
I may sound like a broken record on this topic, but it’s such an important ingredient in the success of all our teams and student-athletes that I’m going to emphasize it again: staying composed, moving forward, and focusing on the next play truly defines championship-level performance.
At this point in the season, it’s win or go home. Our final two teams of the fall — football and volleyball — have reached that stage, with District Finals coming up later this week. Emotions are high, and rightfully so. The suddenness of a season potentially coming to a close can be intense, but keeping our emotions in check and staying focused on what’s gotten us this far will be a major factor in our success.
The key: focus on the next play.
Our volleyball team is 31-7-2 for a reason, and our varsity football team is sitting at 10-0 for a reason. Both have faced moments this season that didn’t go their way — a lost set, a turnover, a missed assignment, maybe even a questionable call. Complaining won’t fix it. Dwelling on it won’t help either.
What matters is how we respond. We regroup, support each other, and move on. Refocus, recalibrate, and win the next play.
Both volleyball and football have natural pauses in the action, and those moments test a team’s ability to handle adversity. The teams that manage those small setbacks the best — that stay composed and keep their eyes forward — are the ones that come out on top, in both sports and life.
So let’s preach that message this week: bad stuff will happen — and that’s okay. You’ve got this. Next play!
And when things do go our way, as they will — let’s celebrate every point, every play, and every moment together.
Week in Review
Varsity Girls XC: The varsity girls xc team ran WELL on Saturday finishing in 13th place, up five spot from their projected 18th place finish. Sophomore Elliana Max earned All-State for the second straight season, this time finishing in 10th place. Sophomore Shelby Zimmer was the Eagles' second runner in 52nd, followed by freshman Joselyn Vogel in 131st, freshman Bayla Curtis 169th, freshman Brooke Scheidel 173rd, and Hayla Goble 246th.
Varsity Football: The varsity football team advanced to the second round of the MHSAA playoffs by defeating Olivet 28-22 in an exciting battle of D6 powers. The Eagles are now 10-0 on the season.
Varsity Volleyball: The varsity volleyball team finished their final week of the regular season with a 3-2 record. On Wednesday the Eagles defeated Sparta and Cedar Springs, before losing to the host school Grant in a nonleague quad. Then on Thursday, Kent City beat Fremont, before losing to class A Muskegon Reeths Puffer. Kent City finishes the regular season with a 31-7-2.

Varsity Volleyball @ MHSAA Districts (@ Morley Stanwood)
Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at 7 p.m. and Thursday, November 6, 2025 at 6 p.m.
The Eagles enter postseason play following yet another outstanding season — compiling a 31-7-2 record, capturing a CSAA White co-championship (their fourth consecutive), winning the CSAA Tournament Championship (their third consecutive), and earning another Dig Pink Invitational title (also their third consecutive).
All of that is something to be proud of, but Kent City has its sights set on adding one more feather to its cap this season: a District Championship.
The Eagles last claimed a District title in 2022, when they defeated White Cloud on their home court to capture the championship before falling to Shelby in the Regional Semifinal. That 2022 season was also the last time Kent City and Morley Stanwood met in postseason play. Fans will remember that thrilling District Semifinal in White Cloud — a battle that stretched until 10:00 p.m., with the Eagles ultimately prevailing, 3–2.
Kent City will open District play on Wednesday night against the winner of Monday’s quarterfinal matchup between Montabella (3-26-1) and Lakeview (14-11-3). With a win, the Eagles will likely face Morley Stanwood (26-12), who plays White Cloud (15-16) in the other semifinal matchup.
If it does indeed come down to Kent City vs. Morley Stanwood for the District title, it would mark the fourth meeting between the two this season. The Eagles currently hold a 2–1 advantage in the season series.

Varsity Football @ Belding (MHSAA Playoffs)

In their first season competing in Division 6, Belding is only eight years removed from playing in Division 4 during the playoffs. The Black Knights’ enrollment of 435 students in 2024–25 — down 73 students from the previous school year — is the reason for their drop in classification.
A school with a rich football tradition, Belding helped popularize the T-formation in West Michigan during the 1990s under legendary head coach Irv Sigler. During that era, the Black Knights made four State Championship appearances, winning two titles (1994 and 1997). Coach Sigler may have moved on, but the hard-nosed, run-heavy style he installed has endured. Under current head coach Monty Price, Belding still employs that same physical approach today.
The Black Knights (9-1) enter the District Finals after defeating Ovid-Elsie, 28–14, in the opening round of the playoffs. Thanks to a strong conference slate in the OK Silver, Belding earned the higher playoff point total and will host this matchup. The Eagles, of course, are familiar with the OK Silver — they were members until the 2014–15 school year, when they joined the CSAA.
Belding’s schedule featured opponents primarily from Divisions 3, 4, and 5, with only one Division 6 opponent: Reed City, who handed the Black Knights their only loss of the season, 24–0, in Week 2. The two teams share one common opponent this year — Godwin Heights. The Eagles defeated the Wolverines 16–6 in Week 2, while Belding beat them 52–20 in Week 9 to clinch the conference championship.
Statistically, both teams are impressive:
- Belding averages 36.9 points per game while allowing 14 points per game.
- Kent City averages 37 points per game and gives up just 9.9 points per game.
While Belding’s tougher schedule helps shape those numbers, one thing is certain — this matchup has all the makings of a heavyweight fight, with the winner earning a home Regional Championship game.
