Athletic Weekly 10-27 – 11-1
As we wrap up another successful season, we want to take a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication of our sub-varsity athletes and coaches. Although we do not regularly highlight our J.V. and Middle School programs in the Weekly, we are extremely proud of the commitment, work ethic, and pride our student-athletes show in representing Kent City Athletics.
This fall, several of our sub varsity and middle school programs had very strong showings. Our numbers are robust, in fact, at record levels in terms of participation. We continue to support a freshman volleyball team, which is not the norm for a school our size and we fielded a boys J.V. soccer team for the first time this fall. Our junior varsity football team was 9-0 (for the second straight season) and our junior varsity volleyball team is currently 22-9-2! At the middle school we were forced to order extra equipment for our football and soccer teams because of the turnout and we have been working in extra games because of the number of girls out for volleyball.
While we celebrate these successes, it’s important to remember that there are no J.V. or Middle School Championships. The focus at these levels is on learning the game, developing skills, and gaining valuable experience that will lead to success at the varsity level—the ultimate goal of all our programs.
To continue building on this foundation, our athletes must stay committed to improvement in the off-season. Getting faster, stronger, and injury resistant through consistent weight room participation and training sessions is key. We also encourage players to seek out additional opportunities to refine their skills outside of the regular season.
Finally, we strongly support multi-sport participation. Competing in different sports not only helps athletes stay well-rounded and prevents overuse injuries, but it also teaches teamwork, leadership, discipline, and resilience—qualities that benefit our students in sports, school, and life.
We are proud of all our Kent City student-athletes and look forward to seeing their continued growth and success at the varsity level and beyond.
Week in Review
Varsity Boys and Girls XC: The varsity boys and girls XC teams competed at the MHSAA Regionals at Allendale on Saturday. The varsity girls team advance to the State Finals at Michigan International Speedway with their efforts on a fast course. Elliana Max earned her first Regional Championship, while Shelby Zimmer (6th) and Joselyn Vogel (13th) also qualified individually. Bayla Curtis was Kent City's 4th runner followed by Brooke Scheidel who turned in a PR in the race. The varsity boys finished in 10th place and were paced by Liam Imhoff (43rd), Sam Kik (46th), and Brandon McCullough (49th).
Varsity Football: The varsity football put the finishing touches on their second 9-0 regular season in school history (2017) defeating Grant 38-8.
Varsity Volleyball: The varsity volleyball team fell 0-3 to Morley Stanwood on Tuesday, their first CSAA White loss of the season. Then on Saturday at the CSAA Conference Tournament, the Eagles captured the 3-peat, winning traveling trophy by beating Grant, Reed City, and then Morley Stanwood (2-1) in the Finals! Kent City is 7-1 in the CSAA White and 28-5-2 overall.
Key Contests
Varsity Volleyball @ Grant Quad (vs. Cedar Springs, Grant, and Sparta)

The varsity volleyball team closes out the regular season this week with two non-league competitions. On Wednesday, Kent City will take part in a traditional end-of-season quad hosted by Grant, featuring local rivals Grant, Sparta, and Cedar Springs. The event promises plenty of neighborhood bragging rights as these four familiar programs square off.
Last year, the Eagles defeated both Sparta and Grant, but fell in a tight three-set match to Cedar Springs (26-24, 23-25, 9-15). This year marks Kent City’s first meeting of the season with both the Red Hawks and Spartans, and their third matchup with the Tigers—Kent City currently holds a 1-0-1 record against Grant.
The competition will be strong and diverse, with Sparta (18-9), Grant (17-12-2), and Cedar Springs (10-26-3) all bringing different styles of play.
The Eagles will then travel to Fremont on Thursday for their final regular season matches against Fremont (32-11) and Reeths-Puffer (18-18). These two events offer Kent City a great tune-up before postseason play, as all five opponents are Division 1 or 2 programs that the Eagles will not face in the MHSAA tournament.
Varsity Football @ Olivet (MHSAA Playoffs)

In a matchup NO ONE saw coming, Kent City finds themselves in a district featuring three of the top six teams in Division 6 based on playoff points.
Unfortunately, both Olivet and Belding faced conference opponents with larger enrollments throughout the season, resulting in more playoff points per win. Olivet’s opponents were primarily Division 4 and 5 schools, while a majority of Kent City’s opponents hail from Division 6 and Division 7.
The other factor that sent Kent City on the road was Olivet’s loss to Portland. Portland’s perfect 9–0 record gave Olivet 4.44 bonus points, while Kent City’s largest bonus came from Godwin Heights (3.889 points). Both teams’ opponents finished the regular season with a combined record of 33–48.
The Eagles feature a spread offense, but can also line up under center in the I-formation when needed. This marks Olivet’s 18th consecutive playoff appearance, highlighted by their 2010 State Finals run. Since then, the Eagles have reached the Regional round once and the District Finals four times, including last season’s 24–38 loss to Constantine.
Although this may not be the matchup anyone expected—or felt we deserved—the season continues, and the Eagles have the opportunity to build on what has been one of the most successful campaigns in school history!

Varsity Girls XC @ MHSAA State Finals (@ MIS)
Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 10:10 a.m.
The Kent City Girls Varsity Cross Country Team is headed to the Division 3 MHSAA State Finals this Saturday at the Michigan International Speedway (MIS)! The Eagles enter the meet ranked 18th in the state and will look to climb the standings as they take on the fast, mostly flat course that winds in and around the historic speedway.
Leading the way will be sophomore Eliana Max, who will look to earn her second All-State finish after placing 18th a year ago as a freshman. Joining her at the front of the pack will be sophomore Shelby Zimmer and freshman Joselyn Vogel, both of whom qualified individually with top-15 finishes at last weekend’s Regional meet. They’ll be aiming to harness the speed of the MIS course and the adrenaline of running alongside 250 of the state’s top athletes to post some impressive times—just as they did at the Portage Invitational and MHSAA Regionals.
Freshmen Bayla Curtis and Brooke Scheidel round out the Eagles’ top five, continuing to make huge strides as they gain valuable championship experience. With such a young and talented roster, the future looks bright for Kent City cross country!
If you haven’t experienced a State Final in Cross Country, it’s worth the trip—bring your walking/running shoes and plenty of energy to cheer on our amazing student-athletes!
