Athletic Weekly 10-20 – 10-25
As we head into one of the most pivotal weeks of the fall season, laser focus will be the name of the game for Kent City Athletics. With multiple teams preparing for high-stakes matchups, this is the kind of week that defines programs — where preparation, pride, and championship-level effort come together.
On the court, Varsity Volleyball has the chance to capture their 4th consecutive league titlei n front of a home crowd as they host conference arch-nemesis Morley Stanwood. A win means the conference title is ours outright — no sharing this time.
Varsity Football will close out their season with a road trip to Grant, their northern rival, looking to finish strong and leave it all on the field before their playoff push begins.
And on Saturday, our boys and girls cross country teams travel to Allendale for the MHSAA Regionals, where the girls team is in position to punch their ticket to the State Finals at MIS. It’s one of the fastest courses in the state, and the competition will be fierce.
This week is about more than just games and races — it’s about rising to the moment, representing Kent City with pride, and finishing the season with the grit, heart, and focus that defines Eagle athletics.
Let’s go get it — one play, one point, one step at a time.
Week in Review
Varsity Boys and Girls XC: The varsity boys and girls XC teams finished their regular season at the CSAA White Conference Championship at Morley Stanwood. The girls team finished what they started, winning the race (this time by 11 points) to claim the outright conference title! All five runners earned 1st team all-conference: Eliana Max (1st), Shelby Zimmer (3rd), Joselyn Vogel (6th), Bayla Curtis (8th), and Brooke Scheidel (9th). The boys team finished in 2nd place for the third time and were led by Brandon McCullough (7th), Liam Imhoff (9th), Sam Kik (12th), and Jaxon Max (14th). McCullough earned 1st team all-conference while Imhoff, Kik, Max, and Elsner were honorable mention all-conference.
Varsity Football: The varsity football fell behind early again this week 0-7, but then scored 24 unanswered points and held on late for 24-21 victory over Tri-County. The Eagles are now 8-0 on the season.
Varsity Boys Soccer: The varsity boys soccer team made history last week by defeating Grant 1-0 in overtime to pick up their 14th win of the season (most by any soccer team), win their 2nd post season game (most in one season), and advance to the District Finals against Fremont (first appearance in a District Finals). On Thursday, the Eagles played tough against Fremont, who has yet to lose on the season, but came up short 2-0. Kent City finishes the year with a 14-6-2 record.
Varsity Volleyball: The varsity volleyball team clinched at least a share of the CSAA White title by defeating White Cloud on Tuesday, 3-1. The Eagles dropped set one 22-25, but then won three in a row, 25-21, 25-19, and 26-24 to secure the victory. Kent City is 7-0 in the CSAA White and 25-4-2 overall.
Key Contests
Varsity Volleyball vs. Morley Stanwood (Senior Night)
Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
This Tuesday, our seniors will take the court one last time in the Nest — and what a finale it promises to be. With a record home crowd expected, the Eagles have a chance to close out their careers with a conference championship on their home floor.
Kent City has already clinched at least a share of the title after doing the unthinkable (again) at Morley Stanwood — storming back from a 2-0 deficit to win three straight sets. In a now-familiar tradition, the Eagles pulled off the same feat last season in a thrilling comeback against the Mohawks.
Now, the stage is set for a winner-takes-all showdown. A victory on Tuesday means Kent City claims the conference outright — no sharing this time. The Eagles and Mohawks have split the crown the last two seasons, but Kent City took it solo in 2022 when the league featured 11 teams.
The Mohawks are a powerhouse, no doubt — but so are we. The next-play mentality will be key. Both teams will make great plays — and both will make mistakes. If the Eagles can stay focused, capitalize on opportunities, and finish strong, it will be a special night in the Nest. We’ll also be honoring our seniors before the first serve — don’t miss it! Help us spread the word — let’s pack the Nest and send our seniors out in championship style!
Varsity Football @ Grant
Friday, October 24, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
In their regular season finale, Kent City will travel to Grant to take on their northern rivals. The Tigers have had a roller-coaster season and enter Friday’s game with a 2-6 record. Injuries have plagued the Tigers throughout the year. Grant has recorded victories over Hesperia (35-0) and Newaygo (34-28)
Kent City enters the game with a 8-0 record after last week’s 24-21 win over Tri-County. Last season, Kent City needed a win over the Tigers to secure a playoff berth, and they delivered with a 34-14 victory.
Friday's matchup marks the 57th meeting between Kent City and Grant since 1950. The Tigers currently hold the series edge with a 32-23-1 record. However, in the last six meetings since 2018, Kent City has gone 4-2.
The 2025 season will be the final year in which these two teams face off in the regular season finale. Beginning in 2026, Kent City and Grant will meet in Week 2 instead.
This is an important game for playoff point purposes — the Eagles may have the chance to earn the #1 seed in their District with a win, the first time in school history.
Varsity XC @ MHSAA Regionals (@ Allendale)
Saturday, October 25, 2025 at 9:30 a.m.
This Saturday, Kent City Cross Country heads west to Allendale High School for the MHSAA Regional Meet — and it promises to be the fastest race of the season. The flat, speedy Allendale course is well-known for producing personal bests, and with a large, competitive field all chasing spots at the State Finals at Michigan International Speedway, the stage is set for a thrilling day of racing.
Heading into Regionals, the Kent City girls are ranked 4th out of 15 schools (including six strong private school programs). But don’t let the numbers fool you — these rankings are based on season-long performance and don’t account for course difficulty or race-day conditions. In fact, many of the times from other teams were posted on faster courses, inflating their rankings.
Back in early October at the prestigious Portage Invite, the Eagles made a statement by defeating top-ranked Calvin Christian and second-ranked Northpointe Christian head-to-head. Only Covenant Christian (ranked 3rd) edged out Kent City. With the top three teams advancing to the State Finals, the Eagles are very much in the hunt for a qualifying spot.
Eliana Max has been dominant all season and enters Regionals with the fastest times in the field. Shelby Zimmer is poised to run near the front as well, while Joselyn Vogel could be in prime position to qualify individually if needed.
The boys team comes in ranked 10th, but they’re aiming to defy the rankings and post some of their fastest times of the year. Senior Brandon McCullough looks to cap off his career with a sub-18 minute 5K, while Liam Imhoff and Sam Kik are both ready to push for strong finishes as well.
