Athletic Weekly 10-13 - 10-18
In sports, adversity is guaranteed. What defines us is how we respond. The Next Play Mentality is about staying locked in—regardless of what just happened. It's about resilience, focus, and the refusal to let one moment dictate the next.
This mindset has been on full display across Kent City athletics by our student-athletes this fall and is a major reason for our success!
Our football team shook off a slow start and overcame multiple penalties to dominate Central Montcalm 46-14. Instead of dwelling on mistakes, they regrouped, refocused, and finished with authority.
The varsity boys soccer team, despite losing several key players to injury, stayed united and undefeated in CSAA Blue play—securing their third conference title in four seasons. They never made excuses—they just kept playing the next match, the next minute, the next play.
Down two sets against conference arch-nemesis Morley Stanwood, our varsity volleyball team could’ve folded. Instead, they flipped the script, storming back for a thrilling 3-2 win to remain undefeated in the CSAA White. That comeback? Pure next-play mentality.
Even in the grueling conditions of the cross country course, our girls XC team dug deep. Battling both heat and injuries, they increased their lead over Central Montcalm from 5 points in the first jamboree to 16 in the second—a gritty, focused effort from a team that doesn’t back down.
This week, take a page from their book. Mistakes, setbacks, and challenges are part of the game—but what matters most is what you do next. So whatever sport you're in, whatever moment you're in—reset, refocus, and win the next play.

Key Contests
Varsity XC @ CSAA White Championship (@ Morley Stanwood)
Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at 4:30 p.m.
The varsity girls cross country team has won the first two conference jamborees, which account for 50% of the overall CSAA league championship. The final 50% will be decided this Tuesday at Morley Stanwood. The Eagles edged out Central Montcalm by 5 points in the first race and extended that lead with a 16-point win in the second. However, injuries are a concern heading into the final meet, so the team will need to be sharp to secure the title.
On the boys' side, Kent City has finished second in both jamborees—trailing a very talented Central Montcalm team, but staying just ahead of Lakeview in third. The boys will look to close the season strong on Tuesday.
Individual All-Conference honors will also be determined at the final jamboree. The top five finishers in Tuesday’s race will earn First Team All-Conference, with additional First Team spots awarded to runners who finish 6th–9th in their two best races of the season. Athletes finishing 10th–14th overall will receive Honorable Mention.
For Kent City, five girls are currently in position for First Team honors: Elliana Max (1st overall), Shelby Zimmer (2nd/3rd), Joselyn Vogel (5th), Bayla Curtis (7th/8th), and Brooke Scheidel (9th/11th). On the boys' team, five runners are in the hunt for postseason recognition:Brandon McCullough (6th/9th), Liam Imhoff (8th/10th), Sam Kik (9th/11th), Emmett Elsner (13th/16th),and Jaxon Max (14th).
It all comes down to Tuesday. Good luck, Eagles!
Varsity Boys Soccer at MHSAA Districts (@ Kent City) vs. Grant
Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.
Kent City made history last week, earning their first MHSAA postseason win since 2019 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Orchard View. That win sets the stage for a potentially historic moment: the Eagles have never advanced to a District Final in boys soccer—but that could change this week.
On Tuesday, Kent City will face northern rival Grant for a spot in Thursday’s District Final at Fremont. The Eagles defeated the Tigers 5-1 in their first meeting earlier this season on the road to a CSAA Blue Conference Championship. But since that game, Grant has turned things around in a big way.
The Tigers are 6-1-4 since the loss to Kent City, including a 6-0 win over Oakridge in last week’s District opener. They also claimed the CSAA Blue Tournament Championship, edging Big Rapids 3-2 in a dramatic overtime win.
This rematch is expected to be much tighter, as Grant has allowed just 1.18 goals per game since their loss to Kent City. Goals will likely come at a premium, making every possession and opportunity count.
Since Tuesday’s match is an MHSAA postseason event, all tickets are $5.00 – no passes will be accepted.
Come out and support the Eagles as they chase a chance to make school history!
Varsity Football vs. Tri-County (Senior Night)
Friday, October 17, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
It’s Senior Night in Kent City, and the undefeated Eagles (7-0) are set to host the Tri County Vikings (5-2) in one of the most anticipated matchups of the season.
Kent City is coming off a convincing 46-14 win over Central Montcalm, showcasing their ability to clean up early mistakes and dominate on both sides of the ball. The Eagles’ defense continues to set the tone only allowing 48 points through seven games, while the offense has found its rhythm heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
Tri County enters riding high after a 39-12 win over Chippewa Hills last week. The Vikings bring a physical, balanced attack and a battle-tested roster. Their only two losses have come against strong opponents, and they’ll be looking to play spoiler on a night filled with emotion and pride for the Eagles.
For Kent City, this game is about more than maintaining a perfect record—it’s about honoring a senior class that has led with grit, discipline, and heart. Expect a fired-up effort from the Eagles as they look to protect home field and gain postseason momentum.
This one has all the ingredients of a classic. Come early, be loud, and help celebrate our seniors as Kent City aims to move to 8-0.
