Athletic Weekly 10-6 - 10-11
At Kent City, athletics are about more than just wins and losses — they are an extension of the classroom, a place where character is built, and leadership is lived out. This fall, our athletic programs have once again demonstrated that being part of a team means stepping up not only for each other but for the broader community.
Our volleyball program continues to be a shining example of purpose-driven effort, having now raised over $94,500 for the Side-Out Foundation, supporting breast cancer research and awareness. Their dedication goes far beyond the court, proving the power of sport to drive meaningful change.
Our cross country team has been hard at work maintaining the trails at the Howard Christensen Nature Center, helping preserve a space that benefits the entire community while learning the value of stewardship and consistency.
And our football team spent time with the heroes at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, offering companionship, respect, and service. In addition to visiting, they rolled up their sleeves to complete landscaping around the facility’s pavilion and cannon — a small gesture of thanks to those who served us first.
At Kent City, we believe that athletics should grow the heart as well as the body. Servant leadership is not just a phrase to us — it’s a principle we live by. We’re proud of our student-athletes not only for their hard work in competition, but also for the way they represent Kent City with integrity, compassion, and a willingness to serve.
Week in Review
Varsity Boys and Girls XC: The varsity boys and girls XC teams had two big events last week. On Tuesday, the Eagles hosted the 2nd of three CSAA White Jamborees, with the girls once again in the top spot and the boys finishing as runner-up. Leading the way for the girls was Elliana Max (1st), followed by Shelby Zimmer (2nd), Joselyn Vogel (5th), Bayla Curtis (8th), and Brooke Scheidel (9th). The boys were lead by Brandon McCullough (9th), Liam Imhoff (10th), and Sam Kik (11th). On Saturday at the Portage Invitational, three girls earned medals in a field of 340 runners! Elliana Max finished in 3rd place, followed by Shelby Zimmer (18th), and Joselyn Vogel (38th).
Varsity Football: The varsity football went on the road on Friday and came back with a 54-0 victory over White Cloud. The Eagles are 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the CSAA White.
Varsity Girls Golf: The varsity girls golf team played in the CSAA Blue Championship at Water's Edge Golf Course last week. Overall, the team finished in 7th place. Senior Deanna Rodriguez finished in 14th place, earning honorable mention all-conference honors.
Varsity Boys Soccer: The varsity boys soccer team finished the week 2-1. On Monday, the Eagles fell to Big Rapids, 0-2. Then on Wednesday, Kent City defeated Tri-County 4-3 in an exciting overtime thriller! Then on Friday, the Eagles celebrated senior night and a non-league victory over Ottawa Hills, 1-0. The Eagles finish the regular season with a 12-5-2 overall record.
Varsity Volleyball: The varsity volleyball team had a great week with a 6-0-1 record and their third consecutive Dig Pink Tournament championship. On Tuesday, the Eagles defeated both Grand River Prep and Comstock Park in a Tri. Then at the 12th Annual Kent City Dig Pink Tournament, the Eagles defeated Orchard View and Zion Christian, but tied Grant, in pool play. Then during bracket play, the Eagles defeated Tri-County, Newaygo, and Calvin Christian for the championship. Kent City is now 23-4-2 overall.

Varsity Girls Golf @ MHSAA Regionals (@ The Falls)
Monday, October 6, 2025 at 10:00 a.m.
This Monday, Kent City will proudly host the MHSAA Division 4 Girls Golf Regional at The Falls of Barber Creek. This marks the second time Kent City has been selected to host this prestigious event — a significant undertaking that will welcome 16 teams and 80 golfers, all competing for a chance to advance to the State Finals at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids.
Golfers can qualify for the State Finals in one of two ways:
- By being part of one of the top three teams, or
- By finishing as one of the top three individual golfers not on a qualifying team.
Girls golf is Kent City’s only Division 4 sport, as all other programs compete in Division 3 (with football classified as Division 6). This year’s Regional field features tough competition, including last year’s top three teams — Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian (State Runner-up), Montague, and North Muskegon — all returning.
Last season, the cut-off score for individual qualifiers was 94. Kent City senior Deanna Rodriguez, who shot a 115 in last year’s Regional, will lead the Eagles once again and represents the team’s best shot at advancing. Competing on our home course should provide an advantage in terms of familiarity, though The Falls of Barber Creek presents a challenge for even experienced golfers.

Varsity Boys Soccer at Districts (@ Kent City) vs. Orchard View
Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.
The MHSAA postseason begins this Wednesday for Kent City Soccer, as the Eagles host Orchard View in the first round of District play. Kent City enters the tournament with a strong 12-5-2 record, earning the #2 seed, behind only undefeated Fremont (17-0-2), who claimed the top seed and a first-round bye.
With one more victory, the Eagles would tie the school record for wins in a season — a mark currently held by the 2024 (13-5-1) and 2022 (13-2-2) squads.
While Orchard View enters as the #7 seed with a 5-9 record, their seeding does not reflect the full picture. The Cardinals have faced many of the same opponents as Kent City and posted comparable results, including a recent 3-2 win over Shelby — a team that handed the Eagles a 1-0 loss earlier in the season. Orchard View is also likely to enter the Districts riding a four-game winning streak.
To make a deep postseason run, our team will need to show mental toughness, stay focused, and respond to adversity with resilience. Not everything will go our way — and that’s okay. What matters is how we respond in the next moment, the next play.
We also ask our fans and community to reflect the values we teach on the field: poise, positivity, and perseverance. Let’s model those values from the stands by supporting our players and coaches in a way that uplifts, not distracts. Our athletes feed off your energy — let’s make sure it’s the kind that helps them rise to the occasion.

Varsity Football @ Central Montcalm

This Friday, Kent City returns to Central Montcalm — but this time, the stakes are even higher, with the CSAA White Division Championship hanging in the balance. Both the Eagles and the Hornets enter the game undefeated in conference play at 3-0, setting up a winner-take-all showdown in Stanton.
Last season, Central Montcalm got the better of Kent City in both meetings, including a 36-8 win during the regular season and a 36-12 victory in the opening round of the MHSAA playoffs. However, the Hornets graduated a significant number of players from that 2024 squad. While they’ve started strong at 5-1, their only loss came to undefeated Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Lakers in a low-scoring 13-0 game.
A closer look at the schedule might suggest some vulnerabilities, but the Hornets will be ready to pick up their third win in three meetings vs. the Eagles. Central Montcalm narrowly defeated Newaygo (28-24) in Week 2 — a team Kent City handled with ease — and had a relatively close game last week against Morley Stanwood (22-8), another team the Eagles dominated earlier this season.
For Kent City to reclaim the league title in 2025, it will take a complete team effort — especially from the defense and special teams. Field position will be crucial, and its impact on scoring opportunities is well documented in modern football analytics. Winning the hidden battle of yards could be the difference in this championship clash.
Friday is also Military Appreciation Night at Central Montcalm, making it a perfect evening to support our team and honor those who serve. Make the trip to Stanton, salute our military heroes, and help cheer the Eagles to a CSAA White Championship!
