Athletic Weekly 9-15 – 9-20
As more summer-like weather returns, it's shaping up to be a busy week for Kent City Athletics! While the calendar says summer officially ends on Monday, September 22, for many of us, the start of school marks the beginning of fall.
If you've attended any of our events recently, you may have noticed some new signage around our facilities. We're committed to creating a safe and positive environment for all who come out to support the Eagles.
One area where we need your help is the parking lot near the Administration Building. Please note: this is not a spectator entrance, and spectator parking is not permitted in this lot. It is reserved exclusively for the visiting team’s bus, officials, and our concessions staff. Most importantly, we must keep this area clear to allow access for emergency vehicles if needed.
Unfortunately, the number of unauthorized vehicles parked there has made it difficult to ensure smooth operations and emergency access.
We ask for your cooperation in directing all spectators to enter through the gates by the ticket booth. Your support is vital as we work together to keep Kent City Community Schools events safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Week in Review
Varsity Boys and Girls XC: The varsity boys and girls XC teams had a great showing at the Sparta Invitational at Fruit Ridge Hay Rides on Saturday. The girls team brought home a 1st place trophy with four runners in the top ten: Elliana Max (1st), Shelby Zimmer (3rd), Joselyn Vogel (6th), Bayla Curtis (8th). The boys team captured a runner-up trophy and had two runners crack the top ten, Brandon McCullough (6th) and Liam Imhoff (8th).
Varsity Football: On a busy night honoring our military and getting a glimpse of the future, Kent City took care of business against conference arch-nemesis Morley Stanwood, beating the Mohawks 40-0.. Kent City improves to 3-0.
Varsity Girls Golf: The varsity girls golf team hosted the CSAA Blue at the Falls of Barber Creek on Wednesday and continued to show signs of improvement with a 7th place finish. Kent City was led by Deanna Rodriguez (111) and Karley Eager (112) who are both in contention for all-conference.
Varsity Boys Soccer: The varsity boys soccer dropped two non-league games this past week, first on Monday at Shelby (0-1) and then at Lowell on Thursday (0-5). In their CSAA Blue match on Wednesday, the Eagles defeated Tri-County, 3-0 to remain atop the league standings. The Eagles are now 8-3-1 on the season overall and 3-0-1 in the CSAA Blue.
Varsity Volleyball: The varsity volleyball team picked up three more wins this past week. First on Tuesday, the Eagles went to Central Montcalm and defeated the Hornets in three straight sets (18-25, 23-25, and 16-25). Then on Thursday, the Eagles traveled to Whitehall for a J.V./Varsity Tri and won both games, first against Whitehall (25-19, 25-19) and then against Shelby (25-20, 19-25, and 25-22). The Eagles are 11-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the CSAA White.

Varsity Boys Soccer vs. Big Rapids
Monday, September 15, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.
The Eagles boast an overall record of 8-3-1 and are unbeaten in conference play at 3-0-1, with two critical league matchups at Ward Memorial Field this week. On Monday, Kent City hosts Big Rapids—a rematch of last season's 1-1 draw that left the Cardinals in second place behind the Eagles. While Big Rapids has struggled in 2025, posting a 1-9-1 overall record and 1-2-1 in CSAA Blue play, their record doesn’t tell the full story. One of their losses came via a forfeit after originally defeating Tri-County, and another was a narrow defeat to Newaygo, the same team Kent City tied earlier this season. The Cardinals’ lone win came against Lakeview, and they earned a draw against current second-place Grant. Then on Wednesday, the Eagles face another tough test against third-place Lakeview. The Wildcats have battled to ties with both Newaygo (1-1) and Grant (1-1) and remain in contention for a share of the conference title. Kent City will need two strong 80-minute performances this week to secure a pair of wins and lock up the CSAA Blue championship!
Varsity XC @ CSAA White Jamboree (@ Central Montcalm)

On Tuesday, the Kent City cross country teams return to Central Montcalm for the first of three CSAA White Jamborees. The Eagles are already familiar with the Hornets’ 3.1-mile course, having posted solid times there earlier this season—an impressive feat on a course not typically known for fast finishes. Heading into this first conference showdown, the girls’ team enters as the favorite, but the margin is slim. Sophomore Elliana Max has been dominant this season, consistently running over a minute faster than anyone else in the CSAA White. Classmate Shelby Zimmer holds the third-fastest time in the league, while freshmen Joselyn Vogel (5th), Bayla Curtis (7th), and Brooke Scheidel (9th) round out a talented and deep top five. However, host school Central Montcalm also boasts a strong squad—so strong, in fact, that between the two teams, every top-11 runner in the conference hails from either Kent City or Central Montcalm. On the boys’ side, there’s a bit more variety among the top teams, but Central Montcalm is the clear frontrunner. Kent City currently sits in second, with very little margin for error as Lakeview trails closely—essentially just one runner behind in the standings. Senior Brandon McCullough leads the way for the Eagles with the 6th-fastest time in the CSAA White this season, while sophomore Liam Imhoff ranks 10th. It’s shaping up to be a competitive and exciting meet as both teams look to make a strong statement in the first of the three conference jamborees.
Varsity Football @ Hart

The Eagles hit the road this week for a return trip to Hart in the second half of a two-year, non-conference series—one with significant postseason implications. Hart enters the matchup with a 2-1 record, coming off a 28-18 loss to Shelby last week. With an enrollment of 408 students, the Pirates compete in Division 6 alongside Kent City, making them a valuable opponent in terms of playoff points should the Eagles come away with a win. Last year, Kent City earned some redemption on Homecoming, defeating Hart 30-6 just one season after falling 44-22 in the Pirates’ first-ever home playoff game. This year, the stakes remain high. Hart runs the single-wing offense—an old-school, ground-heavy scheme dating back to the early days of football. It features a backfield with four potential ball carriers, making it difficult to key in on any one player. The Pirates have an athletic group handling the ball and, based on early results, boast a strong defense as well. Expect a hard-fought, close contest with a playoff-like atmosphere as these two distant rivals square off once again.
