Athletic Weekly 9-8 – 9-13

So far so good!  Our fall 2025 season is off to a great start, which you can read more about below.   This week, I want to take a moment to remind everyone of our weekly eligibility procedures as we will be pulling grades for the first time on Thursday for all student-athletes in grades 6-12.   Each week we will run a report showing any student-athlete with a 62%-60% D- (Near Failing) or a 59% or Below F (Failing). Once we have this list of students, we email each individual, their parents/guardians, their coach, and their teacher to let them know they either have a near failing grade, a failing grade, or both.   A near failing grade is simply a warning, for those with a failing grade, they must improve their grade to above failing before Monday, at 12:00 p.m.  If the student-athlete is still failing ANY classes on Monday at 12:00 p.m., then he/she will be INELIGIBLE for the next week (Monday to Monday).  We use semester grades for eligibility purposes.   We encourage students to work with their teachers to determine the best way to improve their grades before Monday’s 12:00 p.m. deadline and to make use of their WIN time.    It is important to remember that athletics are an EXTRA curricular activity and that our main focus is on being successful in the classroom!

Week in Review

Varsity Boys and Girls XC: The varsity boys and girls XC teams ran at the Central Montcalm Hornet Run on Saturday that featured four separate grade level races.   A number of Eagle runners brought home medals from the event: 9th Grade: Joselyn Vogel (4th), Emmet Elsner (6th), Bayla Curtis (8th), Dakoda Worley (9th), Brooke Scheidel (10th), Brayden Bloom (15th), and David Cox (16th); 10th Grade: Eliana Max (1st), Shelby Zimmer (2nd), Liam Imhoff (6th); and 12th Grade: Hayla Goble (6th), Brandon McCullough (11th), and Jackson Max (20th).

Varsity Football: In their first road test of the season, the Eagles survive a scare from Godwin Heights 16-6.  Kent City improves to 2-0.

Varsity Girls Golf: The varsity girls golf team jumped from 9th place in the CSAA to 6th place with a 475 at Spring Valley in the 2nd CSAA Jamboree on Thursday.   The Eagles were led by senior Deanna Rodriguez with a 106.

Varsity Boys Soccer: The varsity boys soccer team secured an important win over our northern rivals, the Grant Tigers on Wednesday, 5-1.   Then on Friday, it was another rivalry game, this time a 2-0 victory over Sparta. The Eagles are now 7-1-1 on the season overall and 2-0-1 in the CSAA Blue.

Varsity Volleyball:  The varsity volleyball team only had one event during the shortened week, a home J.V./Varsity Tri vs. Hart and Muskegon Catholic Central.  In the opener, Kent City lost to Hart 2-1.   Then in the nightcap, the Eagles bounced back for a 2-0 win over Muskegon Catholic Central.  Kent City is now 8-2-1 overall.

Key Contests

Varsity Girls Golf @ CSAA Jamboree (@ The Falls)

Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at 9:00 a.m.

Our varsity girls golf team will host the nine team CSAA conference at the Falls of Barber Creek on Wednesday.  Kent City made huge strides between Jamboree #1 at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids and Jamboree #2 at Spring Valley Golf Course in Hersey.    In fact, Kent City's 118 stroke improvement is absolutely remarkable and catapulted the Eagles into the middle of the pack.  If Kent City can continue to shave strokes off from their overall score, three more teams are grouped together in front of them with Reed City (3rd), Grant (4th), and Lakeview (5th) shooting in the low 400's.   Although golfing on our home course on Wednesday would seem to be an advantage, for some reason it has not turned out that way over the years.   Perhaps this year's team will stop that trend and have a great day at the Falls.   Our two individuals in reach of all-conference honors at the end of the month could also help themselves with a good day, seniors Deanna Rodriguez (14th) Karley Eager (26th).

Varsity Boys Soccer @ Tri-County

Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.

Another week and another key road game for our CSAA Blue leading varsity boys soccer team.   Last week it was against our northern rivals, the Grant Tigers, this week we head to Viking country to take on Tri-County.   Kent City enters game four of the six game CSAA Blue regular season schedule with a 2-0-1 record, whereas Tri-County sports a 2-1 mark.   Kent City’s lone blemish came against Newaygo, 2-2 tie in the second league game of the season.   Tri-County, on the other hand, has been the tale of two teams, defeating Newaygo 5-1, but losing to Grant, 2-7.   The Eagles defeated the Tigers 5-1 last week.   Last year it was Kent City with the win at Ward Memorial Field, 2-0 on their way to their 2nd CSAA Blue conference title in three seasons.   Wednesday will be another must win for the Eagles as they look to repeat as conference champions!

Varsity Football vs. Morley Stanwood (Military Appreciation Game)

Friday, September 12, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.

Kent City returns to Ward Memorial Field with a 2-0 record and a date with conference arch-nemesis Morley Stanwood in our annual Military Appreciation Game.   Kent City picked up a 42-22 victory over Newaygo in the opener and a 16-6 win over Godwin Heights in week 2.  Morley Stanwood’s struggles continue with three consecutive seasons with a losing record, and an 0-2 start to the 2025 season with losses to Harbor Springs (16-18) and Chippewa Hills (14-27).   Kent City holds a 30-23-1 record against the Mohawks since 1950, including an 8-2 mark over the past ten meetings.   Both teams will line up in the T formation, although each squad will have their own wrinkles to this run-heavy offense.   Prior to the game, we will be honoring our military personnel and veterans with a ceremony beginning at 6:45 p.m.  All of our current military and veterans will also gain free admission to Friday’s game!
