Athletic Weekly 9-1 – 9-6

We had a great first week of school, which you can read  more about below.   Of the seven varsity contests Kent City was involved in, we finished on top in five of them!   It was also fun to see everyone at home this past week and enjoy the beautiful facilities we have for our student-athletes at Kent City Community Schools!

With the change in website, we have been getting lots of questions about schedules.   Our current website, https://kentcityhighschool.bigteams.com/, is run by our scheduling software company that we have used for 20+ years.  Therefore, the schedules should be up-to-date at all times, it is just a matter of finding them.   One feature this website has that the other did not can be found under the “Calendar” tab found in the red bar under the “Go Eagles”.  This will take you to a monthly calendar with all of the athletic events happening at Kent City.   There are also drop down boxes where you can sort to see only athletic events, or home events, or away events.   Another drop down box allows the user to sort for just one sport/team.   You will also have the ability to look at all events in a single day, week, or month, and to navigate to future months.

A second place to search for schedule information is by going to each sports individual page by using the “Sports and Activities” tab located just to the left of the “Calendar” tab in the same red bar.   Once here, it will show the sports we offer at Kent City.   Choose the sport you are looking for and then click on “Calendar”.   To choose the level (Middle School, Freshman, J.V., Varsity) use the drop down box to choose the desired team and then click on the red “Switch Teams” box on the right side of the page.   This should take you to the schedule for that team.   I have also created links and include them at the bottom of every Athletic Weekly.

Week in Review

Varsity Boys and Girls XC: The varsity boys and girls XC teams hosted their annual Early Eagle Invitational on their home course on Tuesday.   Kent City's girls earned the top spot as a team behind six medalists: Eliana Max (2nd), Shelby Zimmer (3rd), Joselyn Vogel (4th), Bayla Curtis (7th), Hayla Goble (8th), and Brooke Scheidel (12th).   The boys team finished in 3rd place overall and had two medalists in Brandon McCullough (5th) and Liam Imhoff (9th).

Varsity Football: The Eagles got off to a great start for the 2025 season, getting revenge on Newaygo with a 42-22 victory at Ward Memorial Field.  Kent City starts the season 1-0.

Varsity Girls Golf: The varsity girls golf  finished in 9th place at the first CSAA Blue Jamboree at Katke Golf Course on Tuesday.   Senior Karly Eager had the low score for the Eagles.

Varsity Boys Soccer: The varsity boys soccer team picked up two wins in two attempts last week.  On Monday, Kent City defeated Algoma Christian 3-0, then on Wednesday, the Eagles defeated Reed City 8-0 in a CSAA Blue match-up  The Kent City is now 5-1-1 on the season overall and 1-0-1 in the CSAA Blue.

Varsity Volleyball:  The varsity volleyball team had a short week, with only one dual on the schedule against Lakeview.   Kent City swept the Wildcats in three competitive sets: 25-21, 25-16, and 25-20.   Kent City improves to 7-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in CSAA White action.

Key Contests

Varsity Boys Soccer @ Grant

Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.

A big CSAA Blue road game as we approach the halfway point of the season comes on Wednesday as the Eagles make the ten minute trip to take on our northern rivals the Grant Tigers.   Over the past three seasons, Grant has delivered some inopportune, early season losses, defeating Kent City once in 2022 and again in 2023 in their first meeting.   In ‘22, Kent City was able to rebound and still win the CSAA championship, in ‘23 however, the team never recovered.   Last season, Kent City shut out the Tigers twice, once during the regular season (5-0) and then again in the CSAA Tournament (3-0).   So far this year, the Tigers are 5-1, with an 8-1 win over Reed City (Kent City beat the Coyotes 8-0) as the only common opponent.   Both teams are fielding a junior varsity soccer team (as well as Newaygo) showing that soccer is on the rise along M-37.   Yet again, another important match-up between Grant and Kent City, but then again every contest between these two rivals is in the category of must see!

Varsity Girls Golf @ CSAA Jamboree (@ Spring Valley Golf Course)

Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 9:00 a.m.

The varsity girls golf team is off and golfing with three outings already behind them, including their first CSAA Blue Jamboree of the season at Katke Golf Course last week.   Their second CSAA Blue Jamboree happens this Thursday, this time at Spring Valley Golf Course on US 10, east of Reed City . . . in Hersey to be exact.    Veteran golf coach Chad Dailey took over the program this season and has set a goal for his team to improve each time out.    At their first league event, the Eagles finished ninth but were within striking distance of Central Montcalm ( 5 strokes).  Therefore, mission number one is to beat Central Montcalm at the next jamboree, then the girls can set their sights on Newaygo and Tri-County who are a little further out.    With three seniors: Karly Eager, Deanna Rodriguez, and Kyrah Chappell; a sophomore, Macy Mortensen; and a freshman Abby Peterson; Kent City will continue to chip away at the teams ahead of them throughout the month of September.

Varsity Football @ Godwin Heights

Friday, September 5, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.

The Eagles will hit the road on Friday, traveling to play a non-league game against a former OK Silver opponent, Godwin Heights.   Last year, Kent City hosted the Wolverines in week two and came away with a 22-8 victory.   Kent City finished the season 6-4, while Godwin Heights was 3-6.   Friday’s game will be the 12th meeting with Godwin Heights all time, a series Kent City holds an 8–3 advantage in.   In their season opener, the Wolverines hammered Lakewood Lake Odessa 38-8.  Godwin Heights returns their quarterback from a season ago and some other explosive skilled position players on the offensive side of the football.   With an enrollment of 622, a win over Godwin Heights translates into some extra playoff points at the end of the season.   Getting those points is not going to be easy, Kent City will need to execute offensively, but more importantly make plays in space defensively.
