Athletic Weekly 8-25 – 8-30

It will be a BUSY week for Kent City Athletics as we start school on Monday and host all but one of our athletic events scheduled for this week (8 out of 9 events!).   Therefore, I wanted to take some time detailing admission procedures to our events at Kent City Community Schools and Kent City Athletic Passes that can be purchased or worked off.   We charge admission to most of our home athletic contests, which includes football (all levels), boys soccer (all levels), and volleyball (all levels) during the fall.   Admission prices are $5.00 per person with a $20.00 family cap.   Children below school age (K-12) are admitted free and anyone 60 years and older can pick up a CSAA Golden Age pass in the high school office.   None of the above applies to MHSAA post-season events.  

As stated above, we do offer Kent City Athletic Passes ($80 – Individual) and Kent City Athletic Family Passes ($200 – Family).   These can be purchased in the high school office.   For those wanting to work off a pass, the individual pass can be worked off by student-athletes at 4 events, while the family pass can be worked off by adults at 8 events.   Once you have let us know you will be working off your pass, you can pick them up in the high school office and the names of the cardholder will be printed on them.  At the end of the season, any outstanding balances will be billed to the cardholder.   You MUST have your pass at the gate to gain admission or a picture of it on your phone, otherwise normal admissions prices will apply.  Passes are non-transferable.   

Also, lets keep our middle and high school athletics in the proper perspective.  Middle School/High School Athletics are a LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, anyone acting inappropriately will be asked to leave and may be banned from attending future events at Kent City Community Schools.   We have seen an uptick of bad behavior at sporting events, including the ejection of a fan this past week at one of our contests.   Your admission to the game does not give you the right treat our student-athletes, coaches, and especially our game officials, badly.   This is not collegiate or professional athletics and we are not interested in your opinion.  Instead, direct that energy to cheering for the Eagles, not making excuses and sending the message that someone else is always to blame when our student-athletes do not succeed! 

Week in Review

Varsity Boys and Girls XC: The varsity cross country team ran in two invitationals during their first week of competition.   At the Union Red Hawk Invitational, the varsity girls dominated the race with all six of their runners finishing in 1st – 6th places (Eliana Max - 1st, Shelby Zimmer – 2nd, Baila Curtis – 3rd, Joselyn Vogel – 4th, Haila Goble – 5th, and Brooke Scheidel – 6th).   The boys finished as runner-up, led by Liam Imhoff and Brandon McCullough in 2 and 3rd place respectively.  Other top ten finishers were Emmet Elsner and Dakoda Worley in 9th and 10th place.   Then on Friday, the varsity girls finished in 3rd place out of 21 teams at the Under the Lights Invitational at South Christian High School!  Kent City had four medalists in the field of 225 runners, Eliana Max (5th), Shelby Zimmer (12th), Baila Curtis (28th), and Joselyn Vogel (33rd).   

Varsity Girls Golf: The varsity girls golf team had their first competitions of the 2025 season, competing at Moss Ridge in the Coopersville Starter Tournament where they finished in 4th place out of eight teams.   Kent City's Karley Eager earned a medal by finishing in 3rd place.    

Varsity Boys Soccer: The varsity boys soccer team finished week 2 with a 2-1-1 record.   On Monday, the Eagles narrowly defeated a tough Wyoming Lee team 2-1 at Ward Memorial.  Then on Wednesday, Kent City traveled to Newaygo and tied with the Lions, 2-2 in their first CSAA Blue contest.   Finally, on Saturday, at the 7th annual Eagle Cup, Kent City lost in the opener 0-3 to Potter's House Christian, but rebounded in defeated Montague 4-0 in the consolation game.   Kent City is now 3-1-1 on the season overall and 0-0-1 in the CSAA Blue. 

Varsity Volleyball:  The varsity volleyball team is off to a great start in 2025, posting a 6-1-1 record in just two outings!  On Thursday, Kent City went 2-0 defeating Tri-County 2-1 and our western neighbors 2-0.   Then at the Reed City Invitational on Saturday, Kent City defeated Maple City Glen Lake, Bear Lake, and Mason County Central, and also tied Lake City during pool play.   In bracket play the Eagles defeated Buckley but then fell to Reed City in bracket play.    

Key Contests

Varsity XC at the Early Eagle Invite (Kent City High School) 

Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. (Girls Race) and 5:15 p.m. (Boys Race) 

On Tuesday afternoon, Kent City will host eight teams in our annual Kent City Early Eagle Invitational.   The girls will run first at 4:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 5:15 p.m.   This is one of two chances in 2025 to catch the Eagles as they fly around the friendly confines of our home XC course behind the high school.   A spectator friendly course, there are several opportunities to see the runners throughout the race, with very little effort.  Kent City’s girls team will be the team to beat in their race, fresh off a two for two week, earning hardware at both events in their first week.   The boys team will also have some runners near the front of the race, but may not have the firepower to win the event as a team.     Tuesday’s weather is looking good and our course is in great shape, so make it a point to check the Eagles as they get their 2025 season underway for the first time at home.    

Varsity Volleyball vs. Lakeview 

Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. 

The varsity volleyball team will open up their CSAA White season on Tuesday night with Lakeview coming to the Nest. Kent City enters the season with three consecutive CSAA/CSAA White crowns, plus two CSAA Tournament championships in tow.  Last season, Kent City dominated the Wildcats in both meetings, never losing a set in six tries, in fact, Lakeview never scored over 16 in a set against the Eagles!   So far in 2025, Kent City is 6-1-1 while Lakeview will enter the game with a 2-2 record.   To open the night, the freshman team will take on Covenant Christian on one court and the junior varsity will play Lakeview on the other court, both beginning at 5:30 p.m.   Then, once these games are finished, we will tear down the nets and get ready for the main event!   It will be the first step for Kent City as they look to capture yet another CSAA White championship and more, during the 2025 season!   

Varsity Football vs. Newaygo (Family Appreciation Night  

Thursday, August 28, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. 

It is the season and home opener for the Eagles at Ward Memorial Field on THURSDAY night, ahead of  Labor Day  weekend.   For the seventh consecutive season, the Eagles will kick off the 2025 season against the Newaygo Lions.  In the previous six meetings, Kent City is 5-1 with their lone loss coming last year at Newaygo, 18-27.   The Lions were no slouch, they advanced to the Regional round of the MHSAA playoffs before losing to Lasing Catholic (39–46) who advanced all of the way to the State Finals.   In the preseason polls Newaygo is ranked 10th in Division 6 and has a number of dangerous weapons returning to help make their version of the wing-T offense go.   Kent City also has a large group of returners from their 6-4 campaign in 2024 and playoff qualifying team, plus some call-ups from last year’s 9-0 junior varsity squad.   This game will be decided in the trenches as these two teams meet for the 56th time since 1950!
