Athletic Weekly 8-18 – 8-23
I hope everyone is enjoying the final couple of weeks of summer 2025. Our high school teams have been in official practice for a week now and this upcoming week will see every team in action in one form or another. If you missed our Fall Sports Parent Meeting on Thursday, August 14 . . . I have included the information that was shared there, please take some time to read over it carefully!
Here is a link to our Fall Sports Parents' Guide In it you will find our coaches' contact information, an overview of our athletic handbook, communication guidelines, medical information, and other important information to ensure a great fall sports season.
One major change for 2025-26 is the elimination of our athletic fee after over 15 years in an effort to eradicate barriers that stand in the way of our students participating interscholastic athletics. Our fall sports numbers are robust, especially in comparison to other schools in our area of similar enrollments.
To help us staff our athletic events this year we are offering students and their families the opportunity to work off a Kent City Athletics Season Pass. These passes will allow the cardholder into all home Kent City Athletic events for the 2025-26 season with the exception of MHSAA post-season events.
One other change you may have noticed when you opened this first edition of the Weekly is our change website hosts. We are making the change after 14 years with our previous provider who was bought out by another company. To navigate to our homepage, this is our domain for now: https://kentcityhighschool.bigteams.com/ We ask for your patience as we learn more about this new site and how we can make it the best in Michigan!
Finally, as we begin this new year, we continue our commitment to excellence in all areas of our athletic program. As part of this commitment, we are using lessons from John Bacon's Let Them Lead, a book about a high school hockey coach who transformed the nation's worst team in to winners. The main tenants of the book are raising expectations and having our student-athletes hold each other accountable to the team and our athletic program. We are developing tomorrow's leaders!
Week in Review
Varsity Boys Soccer: The varsity boys soccer team traveled to Hopkins on Friday and came home victorious with a 3-1 win over the Vikings. The Eagles start the season 1-0.
Key Contests
Varsity Volleyball @ J.V./Varsity Tri (vs. Ravenna & Tri-County
Thursday, August 21, 2025 at 5:00 p.m.
Kent City’s varsity volleyball team will kickoff the 2025 season in the Nest in a J.V./Varsity Tri-County and our western neighbors. The Eagles have lost sound talented players over the past few years, including two from the 2024 team who are playing collegiately this fall. It is no wonder, as Kent City has captured three consecutive CSAA championships and two consecutive CSAA Tournament crowns. With a large group of seniors on the team, 2025 looks like it could be another successful campaign for the scarlet and white. On Thursday, Kent City should be the favorite to beat both teams as they have held the upper hand over the Bulldogs and Vikings as of late, and I would expect that trend to continue.
Varsity XC @ Under the Lights Invitational (@ South Christian Athletic Complex)
Friday, August 22, 2025 at 8:30 p.m. (Boys) and 9:35 p.m. (Girls)
On Friday, Kent City’s XC team will travel south for a 3.1 mile race, literally under the lights at the South Christian Athletic Complex. The first high school race starts at 8:30 p.m. with races every half hour until the final race begins at 11:35 p.m. The course uses a combination of lights around the complex plus portable lighting to lead the way for the hundreds of runners who will compete on Friday night. A welcome escape from the heat, a flat course, and some quality competition are the recipe for some fast early season times. The varsity girls XC team will be young, but dangerous with one senior, two sophomores, and three freshmen. Sophomore Eliana Max returns after an All-State finish at MIS as a freshman (18th place). The varsity boys also have a young squad with just two seniors, two sophomores, and four freshmen. Senior Brandon McCullough will be leaned upon to lead this young group, especially early in the season.
Varsity Boys Soccer @ 7th Annual Eagle Cup
Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 9:00 a.m.
Saturday marks the 7th consecutive year for the Kent City Eagle Cup. Throughout that time span, Kent City has won the tournament two times, including last year’s event. This year, all of the soccer action will take place inside Ward Memorial Field, with just three teams attending. Kent City has already started their season, and as expected, picked up their first win. The Eagles have a talented group of juniors and seniors who are eager to pick up the school’s 3rd CSAA Blue championship, including three out of four seasons. Soccer will begin at 9:00 a.m. with Kent City taking on Potter’s House Christian, followed by Potter’s House vs. Montague, and then Kent City against Montague to end the day. Last year the Eagles lost to Potter’s House (not at the tournament) 0-1 and did not face Montague (they lost to Hopkins). Kent City has the skill set to beat both teams on Saturday in what should be two good early season tests for this hungry squad!
