Kent City Athletic Weekly 12-8 - 12-13

Updated on 12/07/2025

Athletic Weekly 12-8 - 12-13It was a GREAT start to our winter season, with the Eagles finishing 12–1 overall in thirteen contests during the opening week. Even more exciting is the rise in participation across our programs. This was especially noticeable on Friday at the 34th Annual Kent City Wrestling Kickoff Classic. For the first time ever, Kent City fielded two teams in the season-opening tournament. This allowed twice as many student-athletes to gain valuable experience on the mat.On Saturday at Sheridan Lanes, our varsity bowling teams also benefited from strong numbers in 2025–26. The Eagles were able to sub in bowlers during their match against Big Rapids—an approach that not only helped the team, but also provided important competitive reps for underclassmen who are developing into future contributors. This healthy competition for varsity spots is both welcomed and encouraged. We want as many Kent City students as possible to have opportunities to participate in

Athletic Weekly 12-1 - 12-6I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and was able to spend time with family—and enjoy some great food, of course! We now march into the winter sports season with three of our varsity teams in action this week: boys basketball, boys/girls bowling, and wrestling. Our winter teams certainly have a tough act to follow after the remarkable success of our fall teams in 2025—one of the best fall seasons in the history of our school. Last year’s winter season also set a high bar, producing four conference titles (boys/girls basketball and boys/girls bowling) and a District championship in girls basketball. While we are proud of all we have achieved, this is not the time to be satisfied. Living in the past will not help us accomplish what lies ahead. Instead, we must build upon the strong foundation that has been laid across all sports. How can we elevate what we’ve already created? We know what it takes to be successful, and now we must come together as a

Athletic Weekly 11-10 – 11-15Friday was one for the history books! The Eagles proved once again why they remain unbeaten, overcoming several setbacks and roadblocks that would have derailed other teams. Before an enormous crowd, Kent City handed top-seeded Belding their second loss of the season. It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. For starters, this marked the Eagles’ second consecutive road game in the MHSAA playoffs — a challenge they certainly didn’t deserve, but one that didn’t faze them either. After the opening kickoff was returned for a Belding touchdown and Kent City’s first drive stalled, a bit of doubt spread through the visitor stands.  Our team and coaches had other plans, they said NO PROBLEM!  The Eagles answered back with their own special teams spark, pinning the Black Knights at their own 1-yard line. A botched snap on the ensuing punt led to a safety — and Kent City quickly turned that momentum into six more points.Late in the first half, an Eagle turnover

Athletic Weekly 11-17 – 11-22What happened on Saturday has been building for nearly a decade.Back in 2016, our current varsity players were in 2nd and 3rd grade, just beginning their youth tackle football journeys. That same fall, Kent City hosted Montague in the program’s first-ever home playoff game—a dramatic win that marked the start of something special. Since then, those young players have grown up watching the Eagles win, watching their older siblings lift in the weight room, and watching a new standard of excellence take root.Saturday’s Regional Championship was game number 100 since that turnaround began. During that span, Kent City is 75–25. The ten years before it? 26–63.Changing a culture doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, commitment, and a willingness to let go of old habits and expectations. This year’s team has taken that foundation a step further. Their toughness, their unselfishness, and their ability to focus on the next play—regardless of what ha

Earlier this fall (September 17) Kent City Athletics came together on Kleefstra Syndrome Awareness Day, in an incredible way to show support and love for one of our own — Adalee Pelletier Harding.   Adalee, who lives with the rare genetic disorder known as Kleefstra Syndrome, was celebrated across Kent City Athletics as our student-athletes and coaches joined in by wearing purple to raise awareness. The Varsity Volleyball team invited Adalee to their practice, where they all wore purple, took pictures with her, and surprised her with a goodie bag full of volleyball gear she absolutely loved. 💜  The Varsity Soccer team also joined in, wearing purple pre-wrap on their wrists in Adalee’s honor. And throughout the day, countless other students and athletes proudly wore purple to show their support.Adalee’s family shared the following message of gratitude:“The love and support we received from student-athletes and coaches was amazing and something our school should be proud o

Athletic Weekly 11-3 – 11-8I may sound like a broken record on this topic, but it’s such an important ingredient in the success of all our teams and student-athletes that I’m going to emphasize it again: staying composed, moving forward, and focusing on the next play truly defines championship-level performance. At this point in the season, it’s win or go home. Our final two teams of the fall — football and volleyball — have reached that stage, with District Finals coming up later this week. Emotions are high, and rightfully so. The suddenness of a season potentially coming to a close can be intense, but keeping our emotions in check and staying focused on what’s gotten us this far will be a major factor in our success. The key: focus on the next play. Our volleyball team is 31-7-2 for a reason, and our varsity football team is sitting at 10-0 for a reason. Both have faced moments this season that didn’t go their way — a lost set, a turnover, a miss

The 7th grade boys basketball season start the season off in exciting fashion.  The Eagles were able to overcome some early foul trouble and trailing much of the game to sneak away from Newaygo with a victory. Newaygo was able to push their lead to eight points with only four minutes left in the game 22-30.  The Eagles would turn-up the defensive pressure, add some key free throws and go on a 10-0 run to take a point lead with 6.8 seconds left in the game. Newaygo would get the ball in and get off a 3-point shot as time expired, the eagle defense was too aggressive as a foul was called with on time left. Newaygo was going to the free throw line with three shots, 3 makes and the Lions get the victory, all alone at the line the first attempt goes up and is short, now only a chance to tie, the second free throw hits the back of the rim and bounces out, securing the victory for the Eagles. These two teams are remarkably familiar with each other and when they play each other the crowd is in for a great volleyball match. The Eagles would come out fired up and playing hard with some aggressive swings and great defensive plays. The first was a close back and forth battle with the Eagles earning the victory 25-20. The second set again was much of the same with both teams making great plays on offense and defense. Neither team was willing to give up any easy points. The Eagles would take a small lead only to see the Mohawks come back and tie it up at 21. Both teams would continue to exchange points back and forth, but the Mohawks would pull out the tight one 27-25. The third set was another great battle, but the Eagles found themselves fighting a few points behind much of the set. With the Eagles down 19-23, Milah Mollie

The second set was not a great set for the Eagles, too many mistakes and not enough energy and they would find the Wildcats evening up the match with the win 25-20. This did not sit well with the Eagles, and they would come out fighting to get the win and move on. They did that by playing much more aggressively on offense and defense. A long serving run by Ellie Hansen would help the Eagles take control early. They would win the third set 25-9. The final set the Wildcats were not going to give up, but the Eagles would win 25-15 thanks to two long serve runs by Alyssa Miller and some great hitting by the Eagles. The second set the Red Hawks had a server go on a long run that the Eagles could not break and lost the second set as well 15-25. The last match of the night the Eagles took on the Grant Tigers. Coming off a loss to the Cedar the first set was more of the Eagles just not being able to play consistent volleyball and the Tigers took the set 16-25. The Varsity Volleyball Team played the Mohawks on Tuesday night.  We also celebrated Senior night for our seven seniors.  The Eagles had a one game lead in the league standings going into the night.  The first match was a tight battle with the Eagles losing a tight one 24-26.  The next two sets would have the Eagles making some great plays, but just didn’t have enough aggressive offense to get the win and lost 17-25 and 16-25.  The Eagles played hard and didn’t give up and end the regular league season as CSAA White Co-Champions with the Mohawks. This was also the Seniors last game on their home court.  We would recognize Brooklin Armstrong, Laynee Hoffman, Lylah Larson, Sienna Larson, Alyssa Miller, Maddy Mitchell and Milah Mollien for their years of dedication to the volleyball program.  These student-athletes have had lots of success on and off the court and have set a great example for the younger athletes.  We will miss each of them and wish
